These cheerful young crewmen were known as bellboys or cabin boys, essential members of the service staff aboard great ocean liners.

Their duties included carrying passengers’ luggage, delivering telegrams and letters, and personally informing first-class guests about meal times, social events, or shipboard announcements. Always dressed neatly in uniform, they were the polite, ever-smiling faces of shipboard hospitality.

The “Big Piece” of Titanic—a 15-ton section of the ship’s hull—was raised from the Atlantic in August 1998 after nearly four miles beneath the sea. The actual lift from the seabed to the surface took around 12 to 16 hours, though preparation and recovery work spanned several days.

Using remotely operated vehicles, steel lift frames, and air-filled bags, engineers carefully brought the fragile, corroded metal up without breaking it. The massive artifact, believed to be from the starboard hull near the first-class cabins, is now displayed at the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition in Las Vegas.
