National DAT Average RPM right now for a Van is $3.14/mile. Our clients are earning $3.59 per mile which is 14% better than national average. We strive for 15% or better, and last year averaged 19% more for Dry Van.

Other key metrics:
Average dead head is 14.4 miles
Average rate is $3,088 per load
Average RPM including DH is $3.53/mile

TUESDAY TIP!

Rates are very volatile depending on the lane, your equipment, seasons, commodity, etc. I have noticed in forums carriers saying, "Brokers are lowering the rates" . They are not the ones who set the rates, the carrier is. The broker does play a part in handling capacity and knowing what the demand for the truck is, so a lot of times they are close with their offer. But, you are not required to take any offer you do not want.

Five easy tips for running a profitable truck.

1. Know Your costs! Calculate your expenses and know your estimated miles, so you can calculate your minimum rate per mile to reach your goals.

2. Understand Load to Truck ratio. Understand where your truck is in the most demand and run those lanes

3. Know the high paying commodities! Most of us know if it’s cheap on the shelves, it’s cheap to haul. So find higher value commodities or speciality freight that will earn you more money.

4. NEGOTIATE! If running off the spot market or with brokered loads it’s easy to use load board tools to know what the average rate on a load is. Don’t be afraid to walk away from a load of it doesn’t meet your expectations.

5. Minimize dead head, get paid for accessorials such as detention, layovers, tarping, etc. those are all wasted energy and time, and time is money ….if you don’t get compensated for it.
