I spent three hours last night ugly crying in the bathroom while my daughter slept, because I couldn't afford the Snow White party she'd been dreaming about for months. Her teacher had thrown this massive princess celebration for another girl last week, and Maya came home asking if she could have "just something small, Mommy, maybe just the yellow tablecloth?" The way she said it so carefully, like she was already preparing for me to say no, that's what absolutely destroyed me.
I'd been selling my handmade party decorations on Tedooo app for almost a year, but December was brutal and I'd barely made enough to cover rent. When I opened my shop notifications that morning and saw someone had ordered a custom princess backdrop, I actually laughed out loud at the irony. I was making magical parties for other people's kids while my own daughter was learning to lower her expectations. The kitchen smelled like burnt coffee and defeat.
Then my neighbor Maria knocked on my door holding this enormous Snow White cutout she'd made herself. Turns out she'd seen my Tedooo shop and knew I did parties, wanted to trade her woodworking skills for some of my painted signs she needed for her granddaughter's quinceañera. We stayed up until 2am, her cutting plywood in my garage, me hot gluing yellow tulle until my fingers went numb, both of us drinking wine and crying about being broke moms who just want to give our kids everything.
Maya's face this morning when she saw that table made every single tear worth it. She kept touching the tulle like it might disappear, whispering "it's so pretty, Mommy." Maria and I are doing a whole collaboration thing now on both our Tedooo shops, helping each other out. Turns out magic doesn't always cost what you think it does.
