Rapid City Regional Airport Western South Dakota’s full-service airport, served by American, Delta, United, Allegiant, and Sun Country. Connecting Rapid City, the Black Hills, and Mt.

Rushmore to major hubs across the country. Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is located in western South Dakota near the beautiful Black Hills, home to Mt Rushmore. RAP functions as a nonhub primary commercial service airport, with 452,195 annual enplanements. Passenger travel, cargo movement, and tourism activity together contribute roughly $535 million to the regional economy each year, supporting both year-round business travel and a heavily seasonal visitor base. Commercial service includes Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Sun Country Airlines, with nonstop service to core hubs including Denver, Minneapolis, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, and Phoenix. Owned and operated by the City of Rapid City, RAP serves as the primary commercial airport for a five-state catchment area and supports a mix of commercial, general aviation, military, and air cargo operations. Time flies - 35 years ago today, Governor George Mickelson unveiled a bronze bust honoring former South Dakota Governor Joe Foss at Rapid City Regional Airport.

Foss was a Marine Corps pilot in World War II, a Medal of Honor recipient, and the first American to equal Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker’s World War I record of 26 downed enemy aircraft. He later helped organize the South Dakota Air National Guard, served as South Dakota’s 20th governor, and remained active in aviation, military, civic, and sports leadership throughout his life.

The bust was presented by Ruth Ziolkowski of Crazy Horse Memorial. Her late husband, Korczak Ziolkowski, sculpted the original piece.

Thirty-five years later, the bust remains part of RAP’s history and a tribute to one of South Dakota’s most distinguished aviation figures.

RAPID CITY REGIONAL AIRPORT TO CONDUCT FULL-SCALE EMERGENCY EXERCISE SEPTEMBER 23
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Regional Airport and the Rapid City Fire Department will conduct a triennial full scale emergency exercise on Wednesday, September 23, beginning at 5 p.m. The exercise is designed to test and strengthen the coordinated emergency response capabilities of agencies and organizations that would respond to a major incident at the airport.
Multiple emergency response agencies and vehicles will participate, along with community volunteers who will serve as part of the exercise scenario.
The entire incident command system will be incorporated into the exercise, allowing participating agencies to evaluate communications, coordination, resource management and response operations during a large-scale airport emergency.
Rapid City Regional Airport is certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate as a public use airport with scheduled passenger service. As part of that certification, the FAA requires the airport to conduct a full-scale emergency exercise every three years.
The exercise is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on September 23 and is expected to involve emergency response activity at the airport. The exercise is a planned training event and is not an actual emergency.
