Veneer isn’t fake. It’s real wood, sliced thin instead of sawn thick.

And ‘solid wood lasts longer’ isn’t true. Solid wood moves, a tabletop in a dry room cracks within a year. Layered veneer locks the grain in opposite directions. It stays where you put it.
Slicing uses almost the whole tree. Sawing wastes nearly half.
