Fuji Round 4 | July 19-21 | SFL Recap & Struggles: Kaylen Frederick and Pilot ONE Racing struggled with lap times that were one second off the pace throughout the entire weekend, finishing last in almost every session. In the final race 3, the engine warning lights required retirement and a DNF. We look forward to racing the next event in the Japanese SFL championship with better equipment & results, at Okayama International Circuit on September 13-15!

SFL Sugo F3 Race 8 & 9 Update | June 30: Race 8 | Starting on pole in rain and on rain tires, Kaylen Frederick relinquished P1 on a restart, however maintained P2 until the final lap when teammate Koibe and Kaylen came together, resulting in a 5-second penalty and revising Frederick’s finish to 5th.
Race 9 | Starting 12TH (last due to tire failure and race finish in Race 7), Kaylen pounced and secured 8th place in lap 1. However, due to fog conditions laps 6-21 were run behind the safety car with no further racing to resume.

Sugo, Japan SFL Race 7 | Round 3 | June 22nd/Saturday
Starting Position: 2nd Place
Finish Position: 12th Place (Tire Failure)
After a reasonable start, Kaylen circulated comfortably in 2nd position. Monitoring his pace and protecting his tires, Kaylen established a pace ahead of pursuing drivers behind. On lap 7, Kaylen’s right rear tire lost grip precipitously, attributable to a faulty and failing tire (see below). Running at a pace 2-3 seconds per lap slower than others, Kaylen Frederick slowing pace was not defendable and he was eventually overtaken by all drivers in the race. On lap 11, the car retired as further running was dangerous. This tire failure had further important repercussions, as start position for Race 3 of the weekend is dependent on finishing positions in Race 1, relegating Kaylen Fredrick to start Race 3 at the end of the field in P12.

Feature Race 2 | July 30th: With a wet track, no rain on the forecast, and cool early AM temperatures, tire choice determined race outcomes. Seven drivers at the back of the field opted for rains and ran all the way to the front. Kaylen and drivers all around him dropped 7 positions within the first half lap. Racing was intense, keeping tire temperatures high was critical both behind the safety car and over the long straights on a cool track. Racing from 24th, Kaylen applied track knowledge, attacked, and finished 15th. Now looking forward to the season finale at Monza in September!

Saturday Sprint Race 1 @ Spa: July 29th: Under a full wet track but with a strong grasp of the Spa wet line, Kaylen advanced from P17 to P13 in Turn 1. Coming out of the turn, Kaylen was tapped and spun by teammate Saucy. Rejoining at the back relegated Kaylen to 28th. The following race was strewn with incidents throughout, with only 2 full racing laps completed out of 15 (the rest were under safety car). Within those two laps however, Kaylen was in his element, advancing from P28 to P13, fiercely overtaking with precision and effect. See car 7 inside the curb and in the grip below.

Qualifying Spa: Off to a great start and in the top 1-5 in qualifying, timing for the fast lap was critical in the final and closing minutes of the session. Running their push laps in the 2nd to last lap proved fatal, as the final and following lap in the session was much faster dropping Kaylen to 17th, and the one-lap Pirellis were out of grip.

The F3 Feature Race was shortened due to concerns regarding the new FIA high degradation soft tires following Saturday’s sprint race, wherein tires were destroyed and showing cords at race end.

With a driving style of smooth steering inputs, Kaylen minimized tire wear and had strong pace and grip. Although Kaylen gained 3 positions by lap 10 and passed teammate Saucy for 13th, the rear wishbone snapped as he was rounding T9 and ended his race. This was a cruel blow as Kaylen was on the hunt, moving forward and with the soft tyres under control. Post race review showed no signs of hitting curbs or suspension damaging incidents. Next up: Spa, Francorchamps in Belgium.

Sprint Race 1 at Hungaroring: The Sprint Race start was hectic and action packed. Advancing from 16th to 14th in the opening lap, Kaylen was pushed off track by Boya and dropped to 19th. The FIA introduced the new soft high-degradation tires at Hungary requiring tire management to not wear out tires. Kaylen’s smooth steering inputs allowed strong pace and to challenge, even without drivers ahead and DRS. Kaylen fought forward and advanced to P12. After securing P11 another scuffle Kaylen went backwards, lost 2 spots, fought forward and finished 12th. Kaylen drove with solid pacing and racing today, and is looking forward to the longer feature race tomorrow.

F3 Races at Silverstone, England JUly 7-9: It was a tough weekend at Silverstone Circuit with incidents in Practice limiting Kaylen Frederick’s on- track time to 2 laps. The car setup on qualifying was not optimal, Kaylen placing 18th and teammates also looking for rear tire grip. Race 1 changing conditions and tire gamble had Kaylen at 13th mid- race and dropping back to 22nd at finish. In the Feature Race 2, Kaylen advanced to 14th, however a slow puncture dropped Kaylen back to a 19th place finish. Looking ahead now to Hungaroring in the weeks ahead.
