It is vital that people remain mindful of pipeline safety throughout the summer, when many are spending time outdoors. Pipeline markers on roads, trails, and rights-of-way can help identify where underground pipelines are located and how to contact someone in an emergency involving those pipelines.

In the event you see any type of unusual activity along a pipeline right-of-way (i.e., a strong petroleum smell, a hissing noise, etc.) — move away from the area and immediately report this to your local authorities.

For additional information on pipeline awareness and safety, visit www.phmsa.dot.gov.

Diesel is a vital component of many of the industries that support and service the infrastructure of our society (farming, construction, transportation). Diesel fuel is used by tractors, combines, construction equipment, and large semi-trucks for hauling cargo over long distances. It supports the operational efficiency of these vehicles, facilitating agricultural production, building and roadway construction, and the movement of goods across the country.

Summer is one of the most popular times to do outdoor projects like installing fences, putting in a new mailbox, planting trees, building a patio, or landscaping.

All types of outdoor projects can potentially disrupt underground utilities. As you prepare to begin your outdoor digging project, call 811 to have all underground utilities located and marked.

Spending just a little time planning before you start your outdoor project will help protect your property, your neighbor's property, and the vital infrastructure in your community.

Rights-of-way associated with pipeline operations provide safe access and allow for the inspection and maintenance of pipeline systems. When the area is free of obstacles, pipeline operators can view their infrastructure, inspect the system's condition, and respond immediately to any potential issues that may require maintenance.

Pipeline markers indicate approximately where a pipeline runs and can help if you have concerns or need to report something.

A combination of operator/contractor and community involvement makes for a safer pipeline environment. Awareness of pipeline markers, proper digging practices, and reporting any unusual pipeline-related activities will help keep your community and our country's energy infrastructure safe.

Report immediately if you see something unusual related to pipelines (i.e., damaged pipeline markers, strong petroleum odors, abnormal discoloration on vegetation along a pipeline right-of-way).

Pipelines are among the most effective methods for transporting substantial amounts of energy-related products over long distances. Pipelines enable the safe and reliable transportation of fuels to areas where they are needed — supplying homes, businesses, farms, and transportation networks.

In addition to supporting the economy, pipelines deliver the resources that communities depend on each and every day.

Diesel fuel is essential for everyday life. It powers trucks that deliver goods to stores and equipment used in construction and agriculture. Many industries rely on diesel to function.

Heavy-duty vehicles, freight transportation, farm equipment, and backup generators all need diesel because it is efficient and reliable. Diesel engines are popular for their durability and ability to manage tough jobs in different sectors.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration states that diesel fuel is a crucial part of the nation's energy mix. It supports transportation, industry, and infrastructure throughout the country.

Pipelines are constantly monitored to ensure their safe operation. Pipelines are continually inspected through a variety of methods, including advanced technologies and equipment such as a control center and pressure monitoring systems, as well as routine inspections, to identify potential issues that may develop in the pipeline and ensure continued system integrity.

Additionally, federal safety regulations require that pipelines be regularly inspected, tested, and maintained to protect communities and the environment from potential damage.

Wolverine Pipe Line Company was proud to support the 2026 Joe Expo at St. Joe High School this past Saturday, hosted by the FIRST Team 3620, The Average Joes Robotics Team.

The event provided a great opportunity to introduce students, families, and community members to Wolverine’s SAFE Program and share hands-on education about Pascal’s Law, Bernoulli’s principle, the venturi effect, underground utilities, pipelines, 811, and the role Wolverine plays in safely moving the fuel our communities depend on.

Thank you to the Average Joes Robotics Team for hosting a great event and for allowing us to be part of a day focused on learning, innovation, and safety.

Pipelines are a vital source of support for both rural communities and agriculture by enabling farmers to use buried pipes to safely farm their land (at regular working heights) and to transport fuels and other energy products throughout the United States.

Propane is delivered through these pipelines for heating, cooking, and farming operations, while an agricultural economy uses hundreds of billions of gallons of diesel fuel annually to run trucks, tractors, and combines.
