Yesterday was a first for me. What started out as a routine Condition & Value Survey for insurance purposes ended very sadly. I found elevated moisture meter readings across the entire transom, around the stern drives, wrapping around to the aft hull sides. Percussion hammering confirmed delamination of the fiberglass from the wood coring of the transom. Sporadic elevated meter readings were found all over the hull sides, especially around any drain fittings and port lights. I had to make the decision to remove myself from the job. The owners who bought the boat 5 years ago (without a survey) were crushed. I didn't make any money yesterday, but I slept pretty good last night.

Interesting finding today: This dripless shaft packing seal was indeed dripping! It was visibly deteriorating and when manipulated, it would visibly drip. Also, there was a tell-tale streak of water stains on the stringer and bilge floor. If you need to replace one, you better replace them both!

Two fer Tuesday! Condition & Value Surveys on 2 older, nicer boats: 1994 Sea Ray 370 Express and a 1984 Blackfin 29 Combi. Both repeat customers, which is always nice.

Sea Trial this morning aboard the 2000 Formula 312 Fastech from last week's survey. Once the boat got up to 58 mph, I put my camera and phone away so I could hang on while we reached 74 mph.

Finishing off a busy week with a condition & value appraisal aboard this 2023 Com-Pac Horizon Day Cat 20. My out-of-town customer just wanted a second set of eyes to verify condition of the vessel and the new trailer.

Knocked out a couple of structural surveys today so these boats can be properly commissioned for sea trials next week. The 2000 Formula 312 Fastech is a true unicorn. One original owner, never had the bottom painted, never kept in the water, low hours, all original and near perfect.

103 feet of Sea Rays with a combined 3,280 horsepower so far this week. 2009 Sea Ray 550 DA and a 2005 Sea Ray 48 DA. I'm grateful to work with a lot knowledgeable and top-notch brokers in this area, such as Catawba Yacht Sales and Catawba Moorings.

Sea Trial weather this afternoon: Overcast, light rain, 50 degrees with a 3' - 4' NE chop. This 2006 Sea Ray 44 Dancer ate it up. We identified a leaky transducer and a leaky shaft seal. Buyer was pleased. Great job by Captain Eric Mooney of Skipper Bud's.
