Today, Friday, January 9, 2026, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.).

In the 9 counties we patrol and across the Commonwealth, this day is set aside to recognize the local officers who serve the community. Pennsylvania has also historically designated the entire month of January as "Law Enforcement Professionals Appreciation Month" to honor officers at all levels of government.

I would like to personally thank the Officers in all the counties the Reading Blue Mountain and Railroad operates for their sacrifices and dedication to keeping their communities safe and rails safe. They are always willing to provide assistance to our Officers and confront danger without hesitation. Your service is valued beyond words!

The Reading & Northern Railroad Police would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

***Leaving the Scene of an Accident***

On May 6, 2025, Reading & Northern Railroad Police responded to a call for a tractor trailer hitting the signal mast at the Hughes Ave crossing in New Ringgold, PA. The tractor trailer failed to stop then dumped the signal mast on private property at a residence a mile down the road. The property owner then called 911 to report the tractor trailer and driver dumping the materials in front of their home. The signal mast was completely removed and severely damaged according to the signal maintainers.

Video was obtained and Officers were able to find the trucking company's information online. Their safety Officer then provided the trucks destination at Cambridge Lee Industries in Berks County.

Officers then responded to the location to intercept the driver. On arrival the truck was located and found to be unloading. Officers then interviewed the driver who did not admit to the incident at first. Until the video was provided and it was explained that the witness and owner of the property, he dumped the signal mast at were watching him. He then admitted to the incident and stated he was afraid of getting in trouble.

Officers will be filing multiple charges for this incident.

***Drug Arrest***

On April 21, 2025, Reading & Northern Railroad Police were patrolling the tracks in Pottsville City when they observed a male trespassing. This area is marked with no trespassing signs along the railroad.

They then confronted the male and found him to be looking for scrap metal along the tracks. The male was then found to be in possession of glass pipe with a white residue. He was then searched and found to have a plastic bag with crystal m**h and THC oil on his person. The male was then identified and faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespass.

Please stay off the tracks and understand it is dangerous and illegal to be on railroad property. This time of year, we always see an increase in trespassing and incidents involving the possession of controlled substances.
