Thai Graduate Scholarship Program (TGS) - Fulbright Thailand
ฉลองเลื่อนขั้นจาก PhD student เป็น PhD candidate แล้วก็เป็น 4th year PhD student แล้ว (แก่มาก) 55555 ก็เลยอยากมานั่งแชร์ประสบการณ์การหาทุนก่อนมาเรียนต่อปริญญาเอก ตอนนั้นสมัครหลายที่มาก แต่อยากเล่าเรื่องการสมัครทุน TGS ของ Fulbright Thailand เพราะคิดว่าเป็นทุนในฝันของใครหลายๆคนเลยแหละ
มาลงไว้เป็นที่ระทึก หรืออาจเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้กับใครหลายๆคน เราเชื่อเสมอว่าถ้าอยากทำอะไร ไม่ต้องรอให้เราพร้อม แต่ให้ลงมือทำเลย เพราะไม่งั้นเราจะไม่ได้ทำ
ปล. ตั้งแต่ ปี 2021 นู้น เอากลับมาเล่าใหม่ 5555
เป็นการเดินทางที่ตื่นเต้น สนุก และภูมิใจกับตัวเองมาก ๆ ยังจำโมเม้นตอนสมัครได้อยู่เลยว่า สมัครไปแบบขำๆ ไม่น่าได้หรอก ทำไปแบบสนุกๆ ไม่คิดมาก และนี่ก็มานั่งย้อนคิด หลายๆเรื่องที่ได้มา ก็เพราะเป็นคนชอบทำ ทำแบบไม่หวังผลในหลายๆเรื่อง ไอเรื่องที่เราหวังมักจะไม่ได้ดังหวัง เพราะบางทีเรากดดันและคาดหวังตัวเองมากเกินไป แต่ตอนนั้นเราไม่เครียด สนุกไปกับทุก process ตั้งแต่เขียน personal statement, researc statement จำได้ว่าตอนนั้นคือหาข้อมูลจริงจังมาก
ข้อดีคือตอนนั้นทำงานเป็นสัตวแพทย์สัตว์ปีก 🐔 หัวข้อที่อยากเรียนต่อก็คือ Poultry science, ด้าน animal welfare ตอนนั้นไฟเรื่องการทำฟาร์ม organic/ free-range คือมาแรงมาก ขำตัวเอง แต่ตอนนั้นคืออินจริง ขนาดตอนนั้นแค่อธิบายหัวข้อวิจัยให้เพื่อนฟัง เพื่อนยังบอกเหย passion มันออกมาจากแววตาของมึงเลย คณะกรรมการก็คงเห็นเราตรงจุดนั้น เอาล่ะ จะพยายามเล่าให้ไม่น่าเบื่อ เผื่อเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้หลายๆคน ที่อาจจะกลัว เพราะคิดว่ามันจะได้ยาก เกินเอื้อมไปบ้าง แต่ลองทำเห่อะ เพราะเราไม่รู้เลยว่าชีวิตเราจะเปลี่ยนไปขนาดได้ ถ้าเกิดเราได้ทุนนี้เนอะ ;)

- โครงการ Fulbright เป็นโครงการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวิชาการระหว่างประเทศที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดของรัฐบาลสหรัฐอเมริกา มีเป้าหมายเพื่อส่งเสริมความเข้าใจและความสัมพันธ์อันดีระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกาและประเทศอื่นๆ ทั่วโลกผ่านการแลกเปลี่ยนนักเรียน นักวิจัย อาจารย์ และผู้เชี่ยวชาญในหลากหลายสาขา โดย Fulbright ให้ทุนและ grants แก่นักเรียน นักวิจัย อาจารย์ และผู้เชี่ยวชาญชาวอเมริกันให้ไปศึกษา วิจัย หรือสอนในต่างประเทศ และมอบทุนการศึกษาแก่ชาวต่างชาติให้มาศึกษา วิจัย หรือสอนในสหรัฐอเมริกา
Fulbright Thailand
- Fulbright Thailand หรือชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการคือ มูลนิธิการศึกษาไทย-อเมริกัน (Thailand-United States Educational Foundation - TUSEF) เป็นองค์กรทวิภาคีระหว่างรัฐบาลไทยและรัฐบาลสหรัฐอเมริกา ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2493 (ค.ศ. 1950) เพื่อบริหารจัดการโครงการ Fulbright ในประเทศไทย
TGS
แล้วหลัก ๆ มีทุนอะไรบ้าง หลักๆ มี 8 ทุน แต่ที่ค่อนข้างดังก็คือเป็นทุน Thai Graduate Scholarship Program (TGS) ซึ่งเป็นทุนสำหรับผู้ที่ต้องการไปศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาโทหรือปริญญาเอก ณ มหาวิทยาลัยในสหรัฐอเมริกา ซึ่งค่อนข้างเป็นทุนที่การแข่งขันสูงมาก และให้ปีละไม่เกิน 7 ทุน ซึ่งมาจากทุนสาขาวิชา

- การเตรียมตัว
เอาละ มาถึงจุดของการเตรียมตัว เราจำได้ว่าช่วงนั้นเป็นช่วงแบบโควิดระบาด clubhouse กำลังฮิต แล้วมี session ของพี่ๆที่เคยได้ทุน TGS มาเล่าประสบการณ์การสมัคร ก็เข้าฟังแบบผ่านๆ แต่ปรากฏ แม่เจ้ามัน inspired! มาก ฟังแล้วแบบเห้ย มันน่าสนุก และได้ยินคำว่า Fulbright ชอบคน unique ชอบคนมี passion และไอเราก็มั่นใจในความแปลกของตัวเองด้วยสิ แถมตอนนั้นก็คิดไปเองว่า หัวข้อวิจัยชั้นมันก็น่าสนใจนนะ แต่น่าจะไม่เยอะด้วย ที่คณะกรรมการจะได้ยินอะไรแบบนี้ เราก็เลยยิ่งมีพลังใจในการเตรียมตัว
สิ่งที่ตอนนั่นเราต้องเตรียมคือ
1. Online application - จำได้ว่า apply ผ่านระบบออนไลน์
2. Writing sample - เหมือนปีเราจะไม่มี แต่ดูล่าสุดเหมือนจะมีละ
3. 3 letter of references - อันนี้หินสุด จำได้เลยวันที่สมัคร คืออีก 1 วันก่อนระบบปิด ยังเหลือจดหมาย recommendation letter จาก1 ท่าน ที่ท่านยังไม่ส่งเข้าระบบ เราก็เลยโทรหาเพื่อ remind แต่ด้วยท่านคืองานยุ่งจริง แบบมาก ตอนนั้นถอดใจละ ถ้าไม่ทันก็คงไม่ตามอีก เพราะเกรงใจท่านมากๆ แต่อาจารย์คือน่ารักมาก ปากบอกว่าไม่รู้จะส่งให้ทันไหม งานยุ่งมากๆ แต่หลังจากวางสาย ไม่เกิน 2 ชม. อีเมลล์เด้งว่าอาจารย์ส่งเข้าระบบแล้วจ้ะ กราบแนบอก recommend letters จากทั้ง 3 ท่านมากๆนะคะ มาได้ขนาดนี้เพราะใบบุญทุกท่านจริงๆ
4. Resume/ CV - อันนี้ควรใช้ template ให้อ่านง่าย ไม่สีสันเยอะเกิน แล้วก็ไฮไลท์สิ่งที่สำคัญๆ นะ
5. Personal statement - อันนี้สนุกสุดๆ ต้องขอบคุณ Fulbright ที่ทำให้เราเขียนเรื่องราวตัวเองออกมาได้แบบ เอ้อะ ภูมิใจในตัวเองหลังจากอ่านเรื่องราวชีวิต และสิ่งที่เราอยากทำต่อไปในอนาคต ตอนนั้นเราจำได้ว่าเราเล่าเรื่องราวต่างๆ กิจกรรม การเรียน เป็นนักกีฬา ไปเป็นแอร์ และแสดงความเป็นตัวเองให้ผู้อ่านเห็น เราเชื่อว่าคณะกรรมการก็คงเห็นด้วยเช่นกัน และคิดว่าทุน Fulbright มักจะชอบคนที่ มีเรื่องเล่า5555 หรือมีเรื่องเม้าเยอะๆ นั่นแหละ ส่วนตัวคือเขียนเล่าการเป็นนักกีฬา เข้าสัตวแพทย์โดยใช้โควต้านักกีฬายิงปืน ทำกิจกรรม ทำค่าย จบมาเป็นสพ ไปเป็นแอร์ ละกลับมาทำสพต่อ ชีวิตก็มีเรื่องเล่าสนุกๆ อยู่
6. Transcript and Diploma - อันนี้ด็คือใบเกรดหรือใบปริญญาเรานั่นแหละ
7. Study/ Research objective - อันนี้เราใช้เวลานานที่สุด เพราะตอนนั้นนั่งหาข้อมูลอย่างจริงจังว่าเราที่เราสนใจทำวิจัย ในปัจจุบันไปถึงไหนแล้ว ก็ความสำคัญของงานวิจัยนี้ต่อโลกเป็นยังไง สนุกมากๆ ตอนเขียนเช่นกัน
8. Conceptual research idea assay - ตอนนั้นเราสมัครไปเรียนโท ก็เลยไม่ต้องเขียนอันนี้ แต่คิดว่าน่าจะคล้ายๆการเขียน research articles
9. TOELF/ IELTS Scores - อันนี้เราว่าค่อนข้างเป็นสิ่งที่อาจจะยากมากสำหรับใครหลายๆคน เพราะต้องใช้เวลาการเตรียมตัว และสอบ และค่าสมัครสอบก็คือแพงเลยแหละ ฉะนั้นการสอบแต่ละครั้งก็จะค่อนข้างกดดัน ตอนนั้นเราโชคดีมากที่สอบ IELTS ไว้ตอนเรียนจบ และคะแนนยังใช้ได้อยู่ นี่ถ้าคิดว่าถ้าไม่ได้สอบไว้ตอนนั้น แล้วต้องมาสอบตอนจะสมัคร แถมต้องทำงานไปด้วย น่าจะยากมากจริงๆ แต่มีโรงเรียนหลายที่ที่สามารถช่วยเราได้นะ หนังสือสามารถไปหาซื้อได้ที่ Kino หรือศูนย์หนังสือจุฬาก็มีนะ
- Proof reading and writing
เอาล่ะ หลังจากเราเตรียม materials ต่างๆไว้แล้ว ก่อนเราส่งเอกสารเข้าระบบ เราให้อาจารย์ที่เคยสอนภาษาอังกฤษเราช่วยตรวจทาน จำได้ว่าแดงเถือก เต็มหน้ากระดาษ 5555555 ต้องขอบคุณ Mr. Ron มากที่ช่วยเรามาตั้งแต่ม ปลาย จนถึงปัจจุบัน รักนางมาก โชคดีของเราจริงๆ ที่มักจะเจออาจารย์ที่ใจดีและอยากจะช่วยเราจริงๆ
แต่ตอนนี้มีบริการการช่วยตรวจการเขียนภาษาอังกฤษหลายๆ ที่เลยนะ แนะนำๆๆ ให้ทุกคนให้คนอื่นช่วยตรวจทานอีกรอบก็ดีนะ

หลังจากเราส่งเอกสารไปแล้ว ก็คือเพราะตอนนั้นไม่ได้คาดหวังอะไรเลย ก็เลยลืมๆ ลืมไปแล้วด้วยซ้ำว่าสมัคร 55555 จนกระทั่งมีประกาศว่าเอ้อ ติด interview สาขา poultry scoience ตอนนั้นจะได้ว่าตื่นเต้นมาก แบบกรี๊ดลั่นบ้าน คิดแค่แบบแค่นี้ก็คุ้มแล้วเอาจริงๆ ต่อไปก็คือแค่สนุกไปกับการสัมภาษณ์ เสียดายว่าตอนนั้น
- Interview
ยอมรับว่าตื่นเต้นมาก และพูดเร็วมั่นหน้าโดยการใช้รูปแบคกราวเป็นน้องไก่ free range ที่เราถ่ายเอง ตอนไปเดินดูงาน แต่งหน้าเนี้ยบ เหมือนเป็นแอร์ไปเดินตรวจฟาร์ม ตอนสัมยอมรับว่ายากมาก เพราะกรรมการมาจากสาขาอื่น จะพูดยังไงให้ impact ย้ากชิบบบบ และส่วนตัวคือลืมจุดสำคัญหรือ key points ไปเยอะ เสียใจจุงงง แต่นั้นแหละ อะไรที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วดีเสมอ แต่กรรมการน่ารักมากๆ เรารู้สึกว่าเป็นการสัมภาษณ์ที่แบบสนุกมาก สงสัยสนุกไป พังเลย5555555

ใช่ค่ะ อ่านไม่ผิด ตกรอบสัม แต่ทำไมยังได้ทุน เอ้า! อันนี้จะเป็นประสบการณ์ที่แปลกประหลาดมาก เพราะปีนั้น เค้าได้ทุนมาเยอะจากรัฐบาลสหรัฐ ก็เลยได้รับ offer เพิ่มว่าซั่นนนนน! คนดวงมันจะปังอ่ะเนอะ ไว้รอบหน้าจะมาเล่าเรื่องการสมัครเรียนต่อเนอะ

Finally celebrated my advancement from PhD student to PhD candidate, and also becoming a 4th-year PhD student (feeling ancient!) 👵🏻 So, I wanted to sit down and share my experience applying for scholarships before starting my doctoral studies. I applied to many places back then, but I really want to talk about applying for the TGS scholarship from Fulbright Thailand in 2021 because I think it's a dream scholarship for many. 😎
Just putting this down as a memento, or maybe it can inspire others. I've always believed that if you want to do something, don't wait until you're ready – just go for it! Otherwise, you might never do it. 🫡
It was an exciting, fun, and very proud journey for me. I still remember the moment I applied. I did it casually, thinking I probably wouldn't get it, just doing it for fun without overthinking. And now, looking back, many of the things I've achieved came about because I enjoy doing things, doing them without expecting specific outcomes. 😊
The things I hoped for often didn't turn out as expected because sometimes I put too much pressure and expectation on myself. But back then, I wasn't stressed; I enjoyed every process, from writing the personal statement to the research statement. I remember researching very seriously at that time. 🥸
The good thing was that I was working as a poultry veterinarian. 🐔 The topic I wanted to study further was Poultry Science, specifically animal welfare. Back then, I was really passionate about organic/free-range farming. It's funny looking back, but I was truly invested. Even when I was just explaining my research topic to a friend, they said, "Your passion is radiating from your eyes!" The committee probably saw that in me too. 👀
Okay, I'll try to make this not boring, hoping it can inspire many who might be scared because they think it's too difficult or out of reach. But just try! Because we never know how much our lives can change if we get this scholarship, right? 😉
**Fulbright?** The Fulbright Program is the most prestigious international academic exchange program of the U.S. government. Its goal is to promote mutual understanding and good relations between the United States and other countries worldwide through the exchange of students, researchers, teachers, and experts in various fields. Fulbright provides scholarships and grants to American students, researchers, teachers, and experts to study, research, or teach abroad, and offers scholarships to foreign nationals to study, research, or teach in the United States.
What is Fulbright Thailand?
Fulbright Thailand, officially known as the Thailand-United States Educational Foundation (TUSEF), is a binational organization established in 1950 by the governments of Thailand and the United States to administer the Fulbright Program in Thailand.
What is TGS?
What are the main scholarships offered? There are primarily 8 scholarships, but the most well-known is the Thai Graduate Scholarship Program (TGS), which is for those who want to pursue a Master's or Doctoral degree at a university in the United States. This scholarship is quite competitive, with no more than 7 scholarships awarded each year, coming from various academic fields.

Preparation ✍🏻
Alright, let's get to the preparation stage.
I remember it was during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Clubhouse was popular. There was a session where alumni who had received the TGS scholarship shared their application experiences. I listened casually, but wow, it was so inspiring! Listening to them made it sound fun, and I heard that Fulbright likes unique people with passion. And I was quite confident in my own uniqueness! Plus, I thought my research topic was interesting and probably not something the committee had heard often. So, I became even more motivated to prepare.
The things I needed to prepare back then were:
- Online application - I remember applying through an online system.
- Writing sample - It seems like there wasn't one in my year, but it looks like there is now.
- 3 letters of reference - This was the toughest part. I remember on the application deadline day, with just one day left before the system closed, one of my recommenders hadn't submitted their letter yet. I called to remind them, but they were genuinely very busy. At that point, I was about to give up if it didn't happen, as I didn't want to bother them too much. But my professor was so kind! They said they weren't sure if they could submit it in time due to their heavy workload. However, less than two hours after our call, an email popped up saying the professor had submitted it! I am so grateful for the recommendation letters from all three of my recommenders. I wouldn't have come this far without their support.
-Resume/CV - This should use an easy-to-read template without too many colors, and highlight the important things.
-Personal statement - This was the most fun! I have to thank Fulbright for making me write my own story in a way that made me feel proud after reading about my life and what I want to do in the future. I remember telling stories about various activities, my studies, being an athlete, becoming an airline crew member, and showing my true self to the readers. I believe the committee saw that too, and thought that Fulbright often likes people with stories to tell or a lot to talk about. Personally, I wrote about being an athlete, getting into veterinary school through the sports quota (shooting), doing activities, organizing camps, graduating as a vet, becoming an airline crew member, and then returning to being a vet. Life has some fun stories.
-Transcript and Diploma - This is just our grade transcript and degree certificate.
- Study/Research objective - This took me the longest because I was seriously researching the current state of my research interest and the importance of this research to the world. It was a lot of fun to write as well.
-Conceptual research idea assay - I applied for a Master's degree back then, so I didn't have to write this, but I think it's similar to writing research articles.
- TOEFL/IELTS Scores - I think this can be quite challenging for many because it requires time for preparation, and the exam fee is quite expensive. So, each attempt can be quite stressful. I was very lucky that I took the IELTS test when I graduated, and the score was still valid. If I hadn't taken it then and had to take it while working, it would have been very difficult. But many schools can help us. You can find books at Kino or the Chula Book Center.
Proofreading and writing
Alright, after preparing all the materials, before submitting the documents online, I asked my former English teacher to proofread them. I remember it was covered in red marks! 🫢
I have to thank Mr. Ron so much for helping me from high school until now. I love him dearly. I was really lucky to always have kind teachers who genuinely wanted to help me.
But now, many services help with English proofreading. Highly recommend that everyone get someone else to proofread their work again.
After submitting the documents, because I didn't expect anything, I kind of forgot about it. I even forgot that I had applied! 😂😂😂 Until there was an announcement that I got an interview for the Poultry Science field. I remember being so excited, screaming with joy at home.
Interview
I admit I was very nervous and spoke quickly and confidently, using a background image of free-range chickens that I had taken myself during a farm visit. I did my makeup meticulously, looking like an airline crew member inspecting a farm. The interview itself was very difficult because the committee members were from other fields. How could I make an impact? It was tough! And I personally forgot many important points or key points.😵💫
So sad but well, everything that happens is always for the best. The committee members were very lovely. I felt like it was a very fun interview. Maybe it was too fun, and I messed it up. 🤣🤪

Yes, you read that right. I failed the interview. But how did I still get the scholarship? Well! This is going to be an extraordinary experience. Because of that year, they received a large amount of funding from the U.S. government and sent out additional offers! 🥳 When your luck is about to shine, it shines! Next time, I'll share my story about applying for further studies.
Here are the 3 things I want to leave with everyone who is chasing their dreams:
