This photo is facing east along US Route 40 at Pequop Summit in Elko County, Nevada. This segment of US Route 40 was then recently widened to four-lanes and was featured in the 1949-1950 Nevada Department of Highways Biennial. Today this segment of roadway carries westbound Interstate 80 and northbound US Route 93 Alternate.

The Saw Mill River Parkway is one of the scenic parkways located in Westchester County, New York, stretching from Yonkers north to Katonah. The parkway even passes by the Readers Digest building. The Saw Mill, as it is also known as, has a mix of interchanges and traffic signals for people entering and exiting the parkway. A traffic signal at Grant Street in Pleasantville, New York is what had me stopping for these shields.

This view is along northbound Tuolumne County Route E15 (O'Byrne's Ferry Road) crossing the Lake Tulloch Reservoir near Copperopolis. Prior to the reservoir traffic would cross the Stanislaus River into Tuolumne County via O'Byrne's Ferry Covered Bridge. Ahead a placard on the modern bridge indicates the location of the Calaveras County boundary.

O'Bryne's Ferry Covered Bridge was constructed during 1862 as a replacement for an earlier suspension bridge. O'Bryne's Ferry Covered Bridge was removed during 1955 as part of the Tri-Dam project which formed Lake Tulloch. County Route E15 would be commissioned in 1974 following O'Byrne's Ferry Road from California State Route 4 south to California State Routes 108 and 120.

Las Pilitas Road is an approximately 7-mile rural highway located in the La Panza Range of San Luis Obispo County. This corridor begins at Pozo Road (former California State Route 178) and crosses the Salinas River. From the Salinas River the roadway continues eastward following Pilitas Creek to a terminus at Park Hill Road.

Las Pilitas Road was originally constructed in 1886 and has been largely known as "Rinconada-Pilitas Road" historically. This highway originally crossed the Salinas River via fords constructed in 1886 and 1898. In 1916 San Luis Obispo County would install a truss span at the Salinas River which was lengthened in 1948 with a timber post span. The 1916-era Salinas River Bridge was closed in 2006 when a modern concrete span was installed directly to the south.

Stopped by the West Dummerston Covered Bridge over the West River in West Dummerston, Vermont around sunset, so I had to stop and get a photo. Built in 1872, at 280 feet in length, it is the longest covered bridge entirely within Vermont and was built with a Town lattice truss design. It's a great bridge to photograph, any time of day and at any time of the year.

It was a "slow, jerky and expensive" drive this past February along Jose Basin Road above the San Joaquin River Canyon in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Fresno County. Jose Basin Road is approximately ten miles long and is overlaid atop the grade of the San Joaquin & Eastern Railroad (SJ&E). This bridge over Bald Mill Creek is a railroad trestle which was converted for highway usage in 1947.

This SJ&E was in use between 1912-1933 during the early construction of the Big Creek Hydroelectric project. Said fifty-five-mile line originated in El Prado and snaked through the Sierra Nevada of Fresno County to the site of Big Creek Powerhouse #1. The SJ&E was famous for having 1,073 curves, 43 trestles and grades as high as 5.3%. The line was often to referred to jokingly as "Slow, Jerky and Expensive."

There are a number of other roadways located atop the SJ&E grade in the Auberry and Pine Ridge areas. In Auberry there is SJ&E Road which largely serves residential properties. From the eastern terminus of Jose Basin Road traffic can continue on Old Railroad Grade Road (Sierra National Forest Route Eight to Huntington Lake Road (former California State Route 168) near Camp Sierra.

Not just any toll road, but "A Toll Road" is ahead to the right as I-89 meets its southern end at I-93 in Bow, New Hampshire. The highway does extend slightly beyond I-93 to reach nearby NH 3A. Along with being the site of a junction of two Interstate highways, Bow is also the birthplace of Mary Baker Eddy, who in 1879 founded The Church of Christ, Scientist, and also founded The Christian Science Monitor in 1908.

The intersection of Main Street and Consolation Street in Volcano is the place to go in Amador County if you're looking for the backdrop of a classic Gold Rush era town. It also happens to be a place you spend a considerable amount of time at if you like historic plaques.

Mining operations at Soldiers Gulch began in 1849 which were overseen by Colonel Stevenson. The early miners thought the valley floor at Soldiers Gulch had a volcanic origin and named their town "Volcano."

The Volcano Post Office would open in 1851 and by 1852 the town had over 300 homes. Volcano was the site of one of the first hydraulic mines in California which began to be worked in 1855. At the height of mining in Volcano the community had several thousand residents and seventeen hotels. The town plot of Volcano is laid out around Main Street and Consolation Street.

This view is along a then recently widened to four-lane segment of US Route 101 (and California State Route 1) between Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo. Specifically, the view is facing southward away from San Luis Obispo. This photo was featured in the 1950 Division of Highways Biennial Report. US Route 101 has since been fully converted to freeway standards between Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo.

Santa Fe Grade Road near Firebaugh in Fresno County is an approximately 0.3-mile rural roadway built on a repurposed railroad grade. Santa Fe Grade Road begins at Shaw Avenue and continues northwest as a public highway to the end of the asphalt. The grade was constructed by the San Francisco & San Joaquin Railroad during the 1880s but was found to be consistently flood prone. The grade was later sold to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in 1898 which later abandoned it to Fresno County.
