If you travel a lot, you could be earning commission on your own trips. You sign with a host agency as an independent contractor (no degree, no credentials, no experience needed) and book under their accreditation from day one. Every trip you book for yourself pays a commission after you travel, and it comes back to you. I cruise every four to six weeks, so that adds up fast. You also get agent rates on some sailings, plus the occasional friends and family rate. Compare hosts on their monthly fee and whether they require a sales quota. And be honest with yourself: signing up is easy, the training takes real hours.

Should travel agents recommend Margaritaville at Sea, or are its low fares and mixed reviews reasons to stay away? We discuss the differences between Paradise, Islander, and Beachcomber, how travel agent commissions work, and why the Heroes Program could create opportunities for group bookings. Whether you're a new or experienced travel agent, these practical tips can help you set realistic expectations, earn fair commissions, and recommend the right cruise to your clients.

There's a difference between booking a cruise and booking a good cruise. A good travel agent sees promotions and group rates you won't find on your own. When something goes sideways, you get a real human, not a chatbot, a phone tree, or two hours on hold. It costs you nothing extra, since the commission is already in your fare. They know which cabins are worth it (and which ones sit right under the pool deck). And if the fare drops before final payment, a good agent catches it and gets it repriced. Nobody at the cruise line is going to do that for you.

Yes, you can become a travel agent just to book your own travel, and a lot of folks do exactly that. You sign with a host agency as an independent contractor and book under their accreditation from day one. The commission the supplier was already going to pay somebody on your cruise, resort, hotel, or tour comes back to you, and some cruise lines offer agent rates on select sailings. The key is picking the right host. Compare monthly fees, and look for one with no sales quota, so you're never pressured to book for anyone but yourself.

Using a travel agent costs you nothing. The cruise line pays the agent, and that commission is already built into your fare whether you use an agent or not. Booking direct doesn’t save you a dime. It just means nobody’s watching your booking.

A good agent gets you repriced when the fare drops before final payment, is one text away when plans go sideways, and knows the things you’d never think to ask, like which decks to avoid and whether that guarantee cabin is actually a good deal. Same price, somebody in your corner.

*How can you tell if a prospective travel client is truly ready to book or simply excited about the idea of a vacation?*For travel agents, enthusiasm can look a lot like buying intent, and confusing the two can cost hours of research and planning time. The goal is not to dismiss people who are still dreaming. It’s to protect your time while giving serious travel clients the attention they need.
