Mid-Atlantic White Marlin Race

Mid-Atlantic White Marlin Race Race to collect fin samples of white marlin during the 2016 mid-Atlantic USA season. Our goal is 50 samples by end of season!

The white marlin bite is on for the 2016 season! This page is a way to provide updates on the number of white marlin samples collected for genetic analysis at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Anglers out of Virginia Beach and Ocean City are participating to provide samples for ongoing research at VIMS. This research aims to determine how many populations of white marlin are present

in the Atlantic Ocean, and how these populations interact with each other and with angler groups throughout the Atlantic. The sampling process is fast and easy: a small piece of the fin is cut from a hooked fish prior to release, the fin clip is put in a tube of preservative, and at the end of the season all tubes are sent to VIMS for genetic analysis. Sampling kits are provided by VIMS, and shipping costs are also covered. A total of 50 samples are needed for the 2016 season, let's see who can help us reach our goal! A big thanks to all those anglers currently participating. Any newcomers, we would love to have you on board. Contact me via this page or at [email protected].

The second fishing day of the White Marlin Open is already underway, but here's a recap from day one!

The largest billfish tournament in the world takes place right here in the Mid-Atlantic US, and is estimated to generate over $16 million in local expenditures, which is great for the local community. Good luck anglers!

Great summary of the billfish tagging work organized by the IGFA. The IGFA has also been very supportive of my own billfish genetics research, with several representatives all over the globe helping to collect samples. Whatever it takes to get done!

Awesome day for marlin samples yesterday....hot off the press from Kenya and Reunion Island (couldn't resist throwing in our lab marlin mascot). Big shout out to the African Billfish Foundation including Roy and every angler that's helped collect at any point over the past two seasons, and to the IFREMER scientists working on Reunion, thanks a ton Jerome and Evgeny!

Striped marlin samples just in from Ecuador....big thanks to the IGFA for taking the time to collect these! Previous research has shown that striped marlin off Ecuador belong to a different population compared to striped marlin found elsewhere in the eastern Pacific, including Baja CA and CA, USA. These samples will help me look more closely at how this works!

Nice to see Captain Tim Richardson in Marlin Magazine this month! Capt. Richardson has been helping collect white marlin genetics samples from the Dominican Republic, a known spawning ground for white marlin during the months of April - June. Sampling during this time is really critical to the project, thanks for the help Capt. Richardson!

Check out the most recent issue of Marlin mag for the latest white marlin tagging research to come out of our lab. This project was led by Dr. John Graves and wouldn't have been possible without the help from Dr. Ken Neill of the Healthy Grin!

A nice haul of sailfish fin clips just in from the Maldives. Huge thank you to Riyaz Jauhary and his team at the Marine Research Centre on Male! Too bad I didn't get to this beautiful island myself to help with collections!! These samples will be used to improve our understanding of the number, location, and interaction of sailfish populations in the Indo-Pacific.
