WALK Bridge The WALK Bridge project includes inter-related rail and infrastructure projects in Norwalk, CT.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation initiated the WALK Bridge Program to replace the deteriorating railroad bridge that crosses the Norwalk River in Norwalk, CT. The 127-year-old existing four-track swing bridge will be replaced with a state-of-the-art vertical lift bridge. When closed, the WALK Bridge connects the rail line that passes through the heart of historic South Norwalk on the w

est side of the river to East Norwalk on the east side. The Walk Bridge is a critical transportation link between Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston, commonly called the Northeast Corridor. The Northeast Corridor is America's most frequented rail line in both ridership and service frequency. The Replacement of the WALK Bridge will provide safe and reliable rail transportation services while improving navigational capacity and dependability for waterway users. The new bridge will be redundant with two independent moveable spans. This allows one span, or two tracks, to remain in use when the other needs to be serviced. The resilient and sustainable structure will withstand extreme weather events like storm surges and high winds.

SAVE THE DATE for Wednesday, September 16, 2026, 5p-7p when the WALK Bridge team hosts a FREE boat tour with the Norwalk Seaport Association along the Norwalk River to view the WALK Bridge 'up close' and also, to view the special construction area out at Manresa Island! WALK Bridge project reps will be on board to guide our tour on the latest construction updates and progress at the WALK Bridge.

SEATS ARE LIMITED - first come, first served. Rain or shine (except for storms).

Lots of action over at the WALK Bridge in SONO with our crews towering above the tracks to prepare the now de-commissioned signal cables for removal (note: new transmission lines have already been relocated UNDER the Norwalk River via the micro tunnel beneath the river). If you are in SONO, look up and check it out!

Please note: a special WEEKEND travel train schedule will be in effect starting the weekend of Sept. 12 through every weekend until Nov. 1. To take down these wires, we need to work OVER the tracks so train service will be very limited during these weekends. Reminder: multiple concurrent construction activities going on at the WALK Bridge in SONO: Please plan ahead and take alternate routes as posted. N. Water Street CLOSED in both directions between Marshall Street and Washington Street. Giant cranes and machinery is being mobilized and utilized to prepare the high tower wires for removal. Look up and you will see the 'buckets' way up top with our crews doing the prep work. Great view - huge job!
