The WALK Bridge project includes inter-related rail and infrastructure projects in Norwalk, CT.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation initiated the WALK Bridge Program to replace the deteriorating railroad bridge that crosses the Norwalk River in Norwalk, CT. The 127-year-old existing four-track swing bridge will be replaced with a state-of-the-art vertical lift bridge. When closed, the WALK Bridge connects the rail line that passes through the heart of historic South Norwalk on the west side of the river to East Norwalk on the east side. The Walk Bridge is a critical transportation link between Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston, commonly called the Northeast Corridor. The Northeast Corridor is America's most frequented rail line in both ridership and service frequency. The Replacement of the WALK Bridge will provide safe and reliable rail transportation services while improving navigational capacity and dependability for waterway users. The new bridge will be redundant with two independent moveable spans. This allows one span, or two tracks, to remain in use when the other needs to be serviced. The resilient and sustainable structure will withstand extreme weather events like storm surges and high winds.

The new WALK Bridge railroad replacement project is really making great progress over the Norwalk River as the de-commissioned wires are now TOTALLY removed and the next phase of construction - removing the structures - commences this weekend and next weekend. At the WALK Bridge in SONO, the power crews were able to get back up into the towers and finish the work to remove the de-commissioned wires (these wires are now in special tunnels deep beneath the Norwalk River) N. Water Street will be closed through Tuesday, 10/6 to accommodate the special equipment used for this complex high wire removal operation.

Here's what to expect in SONO in the weeks to come through 11/2:

Building a railroad bridge that spans an active waterway WHILE KEEPING THE TRAIN RUNNING is no small accomplishment! Here's the latest update:

🚡🚂🚡 High tower wire removal preparation underway - our bucket lifts stretch almost 300' in the air giving our power crews the resources they need to remove these de-commissioned wires. If you are in the SONO area, look up!

🛥️⚓️🚧 Marine users advised to please steer clear of construction vessels and barges active in the waterway at the bridge.

🚧 N. Water Street will be closed between Marshall Street and Washington Street, 10/2-10/5 for the wire removal operation - which involves removing these wires above N. Water Street.
