One of the highlights of this journey was running into the one and only fashion icon and star of Netflix’s Young, Famous & African — SWANKY JERRY🔥

He’d just finished his workout and we ran into him during breakfast. It would the only morning we decided not to get dressed before heading down so you know I was gagging when I ran into him and wasn’t all fly and s**t! LOL

I asked him if anyone ever told him he looks like Swanky Jerry. He laughed and said “I’m Swanky!” I saud “You lying!” and was grinning like crazy. Once i got over the initial shock, we ate chatted for quite some time.

He’s so down to earth and a dope human being. Although he’s born & raised in Nigeria, he films the show in Johannesburg. We learned so much about the man behind the fashion & the show.

Just know that if you’re ever blessed to sit with him you’ll walk away proud and inspired.

The Cape Town Story They Don’t Teach You 🇿🇦

Everybody knows the beauty of Cape Town.
The mountains.
The ocean.
The wine farms.
The views that make your jaw drop.

But what they don’t teach you is how this beauty was built.

Let’s talk.

THE LAND GRAB

When white settlers arrived, they didn’t just settle, they took.

Through violence and later laws, 87% of South Africa’s land, the land with diamonds, minerals, gold, and fertile soil, was seized and claimed.

Black South Africans were left with 13%.
Dry land.
Infertile land.
Land that couldn’t sustain life.

That wasn’t coincidence.
That was strategy.

THE LAWS THAT MADE IT PERMANENT

After the land was stolen, laws made sure it stayed stolen.

The 1913 Land Act and later apartheid laws made it illegal for Black people to own or live on most of the land, including land their families had lived on for generations.

People were forcibly removed.
Homes were destroyed.
Communities were erased.

Once displaced, Black people were never allowed to return.

RESISTANCE WAS MET WITH CHAINS

Black South Africans fought back.

At different points in history, four major resistance leaders rose up demanding land, dignity, and freedom.

The response?
Prison.
Exile.
Death.

Many were sent to Robben Island, a place designed to break Black leadership.

Even Nelson Mandela spent 18 years there.

Robben Island wasn’t just a prison.
It was a warning.

WHERE BLACK PEOPLE WERE FORCED TO LIVE

Black families were pushed far from economic opportunity and city centers into townships.

One of them is Langa, the oldest Black township in Cape Town.

We visited it.
We walked through it.
We went inside one of the original government-built flats.

What we saw:
• Housing built for labor, not dignity
• Overcrowding by design
• Families still living where they were forced to live
• Shanties that exist because land was never returned

This is not accidental.
This is the long tail of apartheid.

WHY THIS STILL MATTERS TODAY

Land equals wealth.
Land equals opportunity.
Land equals power.

When people ask,
“Why don’t they just move?”

This is why.
You can’t move when the system was designed to trap you.
