The red line marks approximately 46°N latitude, and about half of Canada's population lives south of it.
Although Canada is the world's second-largest country by land area, nearly 90% of Canadians live within about 160 km (100 miles) of the U.S. border, where the climate is milder, the growing season is longer, and most of the country's transportation, agriculture, and industry developed.
Southern Ontario and southern Quebec alone account for well over half of Canada's population, while much of the north consists of boreal forest, mountains, tundra, and permafrost, making large-scale settlement difficult.
It also highlights an interesting geographic fact: major Canadian cities such as Toronto, Windsor, Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Montreal, and much of southern Quebec all lie farther south than many people realize, at roughly the same latitude as northern California, northern Italy, and southern France.

A 2017 study estimated that up to 95% of river-borne plastic entering the ocean came from just 10 rivers.
However, this figure refers only to plastic carried by rivers into the sea, not to all plastic already polluting the world's oceans. More recent research shows that tens of thousands of rivers contribute plastic pollution, although a relatively small number still account for a large share of the total.
Many of these rivers flow through densely populated regions with inadequate waste management, allowing more plastic to reach waterways. For decades, wealthy countries also exported large amounts of plastic waste to several of these regions, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. Some of that imported waste was improperly managed and leaked into rivers and the ocean, adding to locally generated pollution.
After China banned most plastic waste imports in 2018, much of this trade shifted to countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, many of which have since tightened their own import restrictions.

Just a few years earlier, men in many U.S. cities could be fined or arrested for appearing shirtless in public.
By the late 1930s, however, many beaches had begun allowing men to bathe without tops, prompting signs like the one in the photograph.
While men's shirtless bathing quickly became widely accepted, women remained legally and socially required to cover their chests in public for decades afterward.
In many parts of the United States, laws regarding female toplessness have only begun changing in recent decades through court rulings and local reforms.

Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo were two of history's greatest travelers, but their journeys differed in scale and purpose.
Marco Polo traveled from Venice to China in the late 13th century and spent years at the court of Kublai Khan. His account introduced many Europeans to the riches and cultures of Asia and helped shape Europe's view of the East for centuries.
Ibn Battuta, born about 50 years later, traveled much farther. Beginning with a pilgrimage to Mecca, he spent nearly 30 years journeying across North Africa, the Middle East, East Africa, Central Asia, India, Southeast Asia, and China. Historians estimate he covered about 120,000 km (75,000 miles), compared with roughly 24,000 km (15,000 miles) for Marco Polo.
While Marco Polo is often better known in the West, Ibn Battuta visited more places, traveled about five times farther, and left behind one of the most detailed descriptions of the medieval world.
