The Northeast Alliance for Rail

The Northeast Alliance for Rail A coalition of business, civic, and planning leaders committed to improving passenger rail in the Northeast Megaregion.

The Northeast Alliance for Rail is a coalition of more than 50 leading business, civic, planning groups, established to promote improved passenger rail service in the Northeast Megaregion -- an interconnected network of metropolitan regions stretching from Portland, ME to Richmond, VA. The Northeast Alliance seeks to bring the region's political and intellectual resources together to address the t

hreat to future economic growth posed by the deterioration of aging infrastructure and worsening congestion. The Northeast Alliance is committed to a set of transportation policy initiatives that encourage economic development and make it more attractive to do business in the Northeast. The flow of people, goods, and services, fundamental to our economic prosperity, is only as effective as the transportation infrastructure that facilitates it. For this reason, the Northeast Alliance believes that transportation investments should be at the heart of an economic development strategy for the Northeast Megaregion. Major investments in the region's transportation systems, including significant maintenance and capacity expansion in our rail network, will be critical over the next generation if we are to meet the demands of a growing population and economy.

News story on Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman's remark at the Regional Plan Association's Assembly this past April 25th on the future of the Hudson River Tunnels.

"I’m being told we got something less than 20 years before we have to shut one or two down".

“Something less than 20. I don’t know if that something less than 20 is seven, or some other number. But to build two new ones, you’re talking seven to nine years to deliver, if we all decided today that we could do it."
