Back-to-school season can bring excitement, stress, and a lot of emotions — for kids and parents.

I recently appeared on NYC’s WPIX Morning News Show, PIX11’s PIX Parenting Plus segment, to share practical strategies for helping children emotionally prepare for the transition back to school.

PIX Parenting Plus is PIX11’s parenting-focused segment featuring practical advice and expert insights on the everyday challenges families face. The segment reaches potentially millions of parents and caregivers across the New York metropolitan area, including viewers in New Jersey and Connecticut. PIX11’s digital platform, PIX11.com, reported 4.2 million monthly pageviews in 2024.

As the founder of Motivated Mamas and Single Parents Who Travel, I know how much parents are carrying during this season — schedules, emotions, transitions, supplies, routines, and everything in between.

One of my biggest tips: take the mystery out of school before the first day. Read books about starting school, practice the morning routine, let children use their backpack or lunchbox ahead of time, and create a short, loving goodbye ritual they can count on.

Our children often borrow our confidence, so the way we prepare and reassure them matters.

From cruising the Caribbean to Jamaica, Mexico, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, South Africa, and most recently, the incredible island of Bali, Indonesia… our SPWT families have been making memories around the world together for years. ❤️

Our children have grown up together. Friendships have crossed borders. Parents who once joined as strangers have become part of a community that feels like family.
And we're not done yet.

Bali has been absolutely beautiful so far. 💛🌴
Our SPWT families have already experienced so many unforgettable moments together — from settling into the beauty of Nusa Dua, enjoying resort time, exploring sacred Balinese spaces, watching the powerful Uluwatu Kecak Fire Dance, heading out for our Nusa Penida boat and snorkeling adventure, and continuing to make memories through culture, connection, food, laughter, and time together as a community.

Every year, I’m reminded that this trip is more than just a vacation. It is a space for single-parent families to explore the world, feel supported, build friendships, and create memories with our children that will stay with us long after we return home.
And while we are still here soaking up Bali, we are already getting ready for something very special…
