When people hear the word “Cholo,” they often picture a style…
khakis, bandanas, slick hair, lowriders, and that unique Chicano attitude.

But the truth is WAY deeper than a look.

The term didn’t start in the streets…
it started centuries ago.

🌿 A Word With Ancient Roots

“Cholo” appears in records from the 1600s, used across Latin America.
Back then it described people of Indigenous or mixed heritage —
sometimes negative, sometimes neutral.

But when the word reached Mexican-American communities, it transformed.

🎨 A Style That Became Identity

By the 1940s–1970s, young Chicanos in the Southwest created something powerful:

A look.
A voice.
A style.
A way of saying:

“This is who I am. This is my culture.”

For many, “Cholo” became:
