WHO HAS YOUR TRUCKING DATA?

Millions of drivers have used Trucker Path. Routing. Parking. Fuel. Weigh stations. Location.

But how many drivers ever stopped to ask who owns it, what information is being collected, who can access it, and what that information is worth?

Trucker Path was acquired by Renren Inc. in 2017. Renren later changed its corporate name to Moatable Inc.

And when you start reading Trucker Path's own terms about location information and analytics, I've got a whole lot more questions.

I'm NOT claiming the Chinese government has American truckers' location data. We haven't proven that.

But we're damn sure going to find out where the data goes, who can access it, and what it's being used for.

Because just because somebody tells you an app is FREE doesn't mean there aren't implications that come with using it.

We're following the ownership.
We're following the policies.
And we're following the DATA.

Something is changing in trucking, and I think drivers need to start paying attention to something most of us have never really thought about:

What is our DATA actually worth?

Every day, technology becomes more connected to how freight is tracked, verified, dispatched, and moved across this country. Drivers and carriers are generating enormous amounts of information along the way.

But while everybody talks about what technology can do with that information, I think there’s another conversation we need to start having:

Where does the DRIVER fit into the value being created?

Especially when drivers are telling us they’ve been required to use tracking as a condition of hauling certain loads.

I’m not saying somebody legally owes every driver a check today.

I’m saying maybe it’s time we started asking some much bigger damn questions about the value drivers are creating.

Everybody’s talking about what happened between these freight technology companies.

But I’m not interested in getting in the middle of their fight. Apparently, they worked out their immediate problem. Good for them.

What interests me is what their disagreement may have exposed about the direction trucking is heading.

I’ve been talking with some very smart people in this industry, looking at how these systems are supposed to work, looking at the policies, and asking a much bigger question:

What happens when a carrier says NO?

For years, DAT has been a giant in trucking because it helps people find the freight.

But maybe the next giant in trucking won’t be the company showing you the freight.

Maybe it’ll be the company standing at the door helping determine whether you QUALIFY to get it.

I’m not saying that’s what’s happening.

I’m saying that’s the part I’m watching.

Follow the data. Follow the evidence.

🚨 TRUCKERS — WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT WHO CONTROLS THE DATA.

There’s a huge difference between technology helping us make better decisions… and technology becoming the price of admission to the freight market.

All week we’ve been talking about autonomous trucks. But while researching this, another question hit me.

What does AI live on? DATA.
What does modern freight technology live on? DATA.

Now think about where trucking is headed.

More technology. More algorithms. More verification. More information being collected about carriers, drivers, brokers and freight.

So here’s the question nobody should be afraid to ask:

At what point does controlling the data start meaning controlling access to the freight?

I went down this rabbit hole, and the deeper I looked, the more questions I had.

Something is happening in trucking, drivers—and I think we need to start paying attention.

This week started with autonomous trucks, AI and the future of freight. Then I posted something about Jimmy Hoffa, and that damn post exploded. I started reading the comments, listening to drivers, and Friday night I spent two hours listening to some very smart people inside this industry.

And I'm telling you—the pieces are starting to come together.

This isn't about conspiracy theories, and I'm not starting with a conclusion and looking for evidence to prove it. I'm doing what I was taught a long time ago in the Marine Corps:

Listen. Analyze. Listen again. Analyze again.

Who controls the data being generated by trucks and drivers? Who has access to it? Who profits from it? How much power is technology gaining over who gets access to freight? And with trucking influencers commanding audiences of hundreds of thousands of drivers, when did popularity become the same thing as leadership?

There is a hell of a lot of noise surrounding drivers right now. The question is whether we're paying attention to what's happening underneath it.

All week we've been talking about where trucking is headed.

Autonomous trucks. AI. Liability. Money. ELDs. Cameras. Technology.

Then I posted that picture of Jimmy Hoffa and me—and holy s**t, the conversation exploded.

Some drivers loved Hoffa. Some hated him. Union guys spoke up. Non-union guys spoke up. Company drivers and owner-operators started debating. Drivers who've been doing this for decades started telling their stories.

And that's exactly why I posted it.

This isn't really about Jimmy Hoffa.

You don't have to like Hoffa. You don't have to like unions. Hell, you don't even have to like me.

But that man understood something:

There is power in numbers.

And while we're fighting amongst ourselves, this industry is changing underneath our feet.

So here's the question:

WHO is representing truck drivers while the future of trucking is being decided?

What if drivers stopped fighting each other long enough to identify the things we actually agree on?

Pay. Detention. Parking. Insurance. Broker transparency. Regulations. Driver privacy. Safety. Autonomous trucking.

One angry voice can be ignored.

Millions of organized drivers' voices are a hell of a lot harder to ignore.

The future of trucking is being written right now.

Drivers better have a damn pen in their hand.

He knew the power of truck drivers. It’s time we remembered.

The man on the right is Jimmy Hoffa.

The man on the left is me, Patrick Nicholson, founder of Big Rig Nation.

The resemblance in these two photographs is pretty damn striking. But that's not why I'm posting this.

I'm posting it because Jimmy Hoffa understood something decades ago that I believe too many truck drivers have forgotten:

The real power isn't in one person. The power is in ALL OF YOU.

One driver can be ignored.

Ten drivers can be dismissed.

But when tens of thousands of drivers start speaking together, people have to start paying attention.

In a little over a year, Big Rig Nation has grown to nearly 100,000 followers across our social media platforms.

And we've done more than make videos.

We've stood up to trucking companies. We've fought at the federal level. We've put our own money on the line. We've listened to drivers when they felt nobody else would. And we've been willing to ask questions that sometimes make powerful people uncomfortable.

But understand something:

We're not against trucking companies.

We take tremendous pride in the good companies we work with. There are carriers out here doing things the right way, and those companies deserve good drivers.

What we're against are the bad actors who believe drivers don't have a voice.

Some media platforms will embrace what we're doing. Some won't.

That's fine.

Because Big Rig Nation isn't being built by the media.

It's being built by truck drivers.

Every follow. Every share. Every driver who tells their story. Every driver who sends us evidence. Every person who refuses to accept that “that's just trucking” is a good enough answer anymore.

That's how this grows.

And if anyone thinks Big Rig Nation won't stand up and fight for drivers when it matters, they don't know me very well.

Jimmy Hoffa understood the enormous power truck drivers had when they stood together.

Maybe it's time this generation remembered it.

Nearly 100,000 strong — and we're just getting started.

A DRIVERLESS SEMI CRASHES… WHO GETS SUED? 👀🚛

Everybody has been debating whether autonomous trucks can actually replace drivers.

But today I want to talk about something different:

What happens when one of these trucks causes a serious crash and there’s NO DRIVER behind the wheel?

Who carries the liability?

The trucking company?
The truck manufacturer?
The autonomous technology company?

What if a sensor fails? What if the software makes the wrong decision? What if improper maintenance contributed to the crash?

Liability doesn’t disappear just because the driver does.

As autonomous trucking scales, somebody is going to carry that risk—and somebody is going to write the check when things go wrong.

So today, I want to hear from YOU.

Who SHOULD be held responsible when a driverless truck causes a serious accident?

Truck drivers, you might NOT be the first ones AI replaces. 👀🚛

Everybody is focused on the driverless truck—but the truck is only one piece of this.

AI can already handle pieces of dispatching, tracking, routing, scheduling and paperwork. Now connect that with automated warehouses, robotic forklifts and autonomous trucks.

At some point, we have to stop looking at this as simply an autonomous truck.

We need to start looking at the possibility of an AUTONOMOUS FREIGHT SYSTEM.

And that raises a much bigger question:

How many human beings will it eventually take to move ONE load of freight?

We’re digging into autonomous trucking all week because drivers need to understand where this technology is actually headed.
