I keep reading and hearing stories about terrible moving experiences like the one shared below.

But one thing actually surprised me about this story: the moving company apparently didn’t demand more money before unloading.

Unfortunately, that’s one of the most common complaints I hear about bad moving experiences.

A customer gets quoted $###. Their belongings are loaded onto the truck and transported to the new home. Then, before the first box comes off the truck, suddenly the price has changed—sometimes to double the original estimate or more—and the customer is told they have to pay before their belongings will be unloaded.

At that point, what choice do they feel like they have?

Folks, it's always important to hire what you can afford—but it's just as important to make sure you're hiring the right company.

That cheaper, more attractive estimate may ultimately cost you a whole lot more.

Why are they cheaper?

Inadequate equipment?
Unskilled or inexperienced labor?
Improper licensing or insurance?
Or is that low estimate simply not going to be the price you're asked to pay in the end?

Any of those can make you a whole lot saltier than if you'd just rented a truck and done it yourself.

At Salty Seagull Moving Company, we don't believe your belongings should become leverage for changing the deal.

The price we give you is the price we take.

There can occasionally be variables that legitimately change the scope of a move, but when we identify those possibilities, we discuss them with you ahead of time. No games. No holding your furniture hostage at the other end of the move.

And if we underestimate how long a job will take?

That's our mistake—not yours.

We chalk it up as a learning experience, finish the job, and continue providing the level of service our customers have come to expect from us.

Most importantly:

We will NEVER leave you hanging with an unfinished job.

Moving is stressful enough. The company you hire should be reducing that stress—not adding to it.

Below is the experience that prompted me to write this post:

hired XYZ moving for a move from Nanaimo to the Mainland. I paid for their largest truck with what the crew told me to be unlimited hours, expecting a full, efficient load. Instead, they packed the truck poorly (shown in photo evidence the entire upper half of the trucks height wasn’t utilized) and left a bunch of my belongings behind - items I’m now having to move myself because I can’t afford to hire another truck. They also left the job site early, around 2 PM, and left my businesses front door unlocked while I was out getting my trailer to meet them, claiming they needed to catch the ferry from Victoria as there wasn’t any reservations available from either of the two Nanaimo ferry terminals.

They didn’t arrive at my new residence until 11 AM the next day, when I’d been told 8 to 9 AM. I understand delays happen, but leaving my property unsecured and a lot of my belongings behind after charging for the biggest truck and unlimited hours is unacceptable. I expected better from a company with this name. When you pay a moving company to move you and your family, the idea is to alleviate the stress and labour of having to do it yourself, which I am now doing anyways as I have to return to the island to get my remaining belongings. I would not recommend this company to anyone doing a large move. Period.

I just received a call from their Territory Manager shortly after posting a bad review, who ultimately said that they will not reimburse me for any part of the move or cover my having to go back and get the items that were left behind myself. Instead he argued every valid point I brought to the table and simply stated that they’ve never had a complaint about that crew, implying that I am the issue.

Anywho. Just throwing it out there as I’ve had a few people ask about referrals for the move.
