What paperwork does your horse need to travel?

Horse hauling paperwork can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re not used to crossing state lines. Here’s a clear, simplified breakdown to help you prepare:

Intrastate travel (within your state): Generally, no paperwork is required unless your state mandates brand inspections or travel permits. Some horse show venues may require proof of vaccines or a veterinary inspection, depending on their rules.

Interstate travel (between states): States require documentation to cross state lines and pass through agricultural inspection stations, these include:

• Negative Coggins test – a blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia (typically valid for 12 months)

• Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) – a general health exam confirming no signs of illness (usually valid for 30 days, depending on state requirements or specific disease status for a state)

These documents help protect the equine population from the spread of disease.

Today, Coggins and CVIs are typically issued digitally through MyVetLink, which includes photos, markings, and identification details for each horse. Paper copies are becoming less common and are sometimes not accepted at inspection stations.

Additional documentation may be required depending on the state, such as brand inspections, permits, or specific CVI language.

While not always required, it’s also helpful to carry registration papers, bills of sale, or vaccination records.

Having everything prepared in advance helps ensure a smooth, stress-free journey.

If you ever have questions, we’re always here to help.

We look forward to being your Luxury Horse Hauling Partner.
