Runway to the Future: Ribbon Cutting Marks New Chapter For Marathon Airport
Florida Keys Marathon International Airport officials are proud to announce the completion of the airport’s Runway 7-25 project, marked by an official ribbon cutting today, Oct. 6, 2025.
State and local officials joined together for a ceremony in the hangar at Million Air, MTH’s fixed base operator, followed by a ribbon cutting on the center line of the new runway.
The $30 million project began in March and involved relocating and replacing Runway 7-25 while increasing the runway-to-taxiway separation from 200 feet to 240 feet. The increase in separation is required to meet the FAA’s minimum standards.
The program opened with a welcome from Marathon Million Air General Manager Buddy Gilbert, followed by a blessing of the runway by Fr. Oscar Perez Dudamel of San Pablo Catholic Church, and remarks from Million Air CEO Roger Woolsey, Executive Director of Airports Richard Strickland, and Monroe County Commissioner David Rice. The Marathon High School marching band led the group of attendees onto the runway, which was blessed with holy water by Fr. Oscar prior to the ribbon cutting.
“The completion of this project is a major milestone for the future of aviation in Marathon,” said Executive Director of Airports Richard Strickland. “The new runway positions the airport to continue operations at the highest level of federal safety standards and is vital for the long-term sustainability of our Middle Keys airport.”
Key Points:
The $30 million project was funded by a mixture of grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Florida Department of Transportation, and a $2.8 million local match.
The relocation of the runway required the demolition of the existing runway pavement and re-building of the runway pavement section at its new location 40 feet to the north from its current location.
The project was finished in record timing, thanks to the import of new lime rock base and other materials ahead of time.
