FUTURE FASHION CONCEPTS

PART I

One week after the Opening of our Exhibition of “Future Fashion Concepts” at Istituto Marangoni Miami, we finally will be starting to share the highlights with you.

Wow, that was a wild ride!!

We originally had planned to curate the exhibition during Art Basel in December in a different location, which did not work out in the end, and we were not even sure if the Exhibition is going to happen at all.

Upon my arrival here in Miami, Annette took me to IMM, where she is teaching a course on sustainability, and we told them about our concept, and they loved it and suggested that we can curate the exhibition at their beautiful fashion institute, perfectly located in the heart of the Miami Design District.

We decided to focus on companies that are somewhat local for logistic reason but also to keep the carbon footprint in check.

Amazingly, everyone we contacted agreed without hesitation to be part of the “Future Fashion Concepts” Exhibition and to speak on our panel.

Creativity, revolutionary innovation, and a shared value system for a new economy; we all came together with one mission:

Offering solutions that are moving away from extraction and pollution & towards a circular & renewable fashion and textile industry.

Firstly, a big thank you to for all their support, especially to , and and all the students involved.

And to our amazing exhibitors - and - who so generously shared their experiences and knowledge with us and our audience.

Felder Felder & Istituto Marangoni Miami present Future Fashion Concepts, an exhibition dedicated to exploring the potential of sustainable textiles for the future.
Curated by Annette and Daniela Felder, Future Fashion Concepts aims to shed light on the ongoing efforts to advance sustainable fashion and celebrate the innovators driving change.
Annette and Daniela Felder are renowned for integrating cutting-edge plant-based materials into their designs, blending haute couture with responsible practices. Beyond their iconic brand, they actively engage in community outreach by organizing educational events that spotlight solution-driven innovations within the broader context of responsible production and consumption, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12). Their initiatives have spanned from London to Berlin and now Miami.

In the 2024 edition of Future Fashion Concepts, the exhibition will showcase materials and designs crafted from mycelium, seaweed, recycled textile waste, and more, highlighting the diverse array of sustainable developments.
The Opening Night will feature a viewing of the Exhibition followed by a panel discussion featuring material creators Ecovative, Soarce, and Osomtex.

ID once wrote about us that we are two bodies & two minds and one soul.

Today is our shared twin birthday and we are spending it together in London
to attend the incredible Future Fabrics Expo and explore the newest developments & textiles in responsible fashion.
London was our chosen home city for over 15years and it still feels like home whenever we come here!

It is not quite that often that we get to spend our birthdays together, so we cherish it a lot.

Born as identical mirror twins (one left-handed, one right-handed), we have endless gratitude that we were brought into this world together!

Saying that, we are not the kind of twins that have an identical life.

One is still together with her first boyfriend (20 years this year) to whom she is married with a beautiful daughter, living in Miami Florida, and one of us is divorced, single & living in Berlin (with winter escapes to Miami, of course !)

One extremely introverted with a handful of carefully selected friends and the focus always on family first and the other one quite extroverted with a lot of friends from all over the world who are like an extended family to her.

One of us worships her solitude more than anything and one of us could not spend a minute on her own until recently. This may have changed, although she will never reach the level of satisfaction her sister enjoys when on her own.

Our personal lives might be quite different but our values completely align as do our visions and goals.

Even as kids, we never doubted each other’s findings and encouraged each other to integrate them into our lives.

Becoming vegetarian with 15 ( & vegan about 6 years ago), deciding to explore the world before studying, or living in a squad in Amsterdam while modelling (to finance our travels) and finally deciding to study fashion at the renowned Central Saint Martin’s College of the Arts in London and starting our brand Felder Felder.
Our journey is together, even if we are continents apart and have very different lives, we have a confidant second to none since birth.

Becoming a plant-based Brand (Part 1):

Being a brand that started out with a strong focus on leather goods and then making the conscious decision to not use any animal derived skins anymore about ten years ago, challenged us to completely rethink the way we design and the materials that we can facilitate in our collections.

In the beginning we were more focused on using vegan alternatives than on the sustainability aspect, and we used a lot of faux leathers that were basically plastic!
Not great for the planetandneither for you nor your wellbeing!

It did not take us long to realise that this is not the way to go for us, as we were not only amid to turn our brand around to a vegan one but also to a sustainable one!

That it was easier said than done is an understatement, as at the time, there were hardly any environmentally friendly plant-based leather alternatives available.

We decided to focus on sustainable couture, as the materials we could get were quite costly and mainly far away from being available in bulk.

This has certainly been part of shaping us of who we are today as a brand as well as what we want to represent with our designs.

The longing to create with a purpose and to create the least amount of harm for our planet and all its inhabitants has been at the forefront of our designs ever since, and we have worked with a big variety of plant-based, mainly petroleum free leather alternatives that have enriched our way of designing.

Are there challenges? Always. (watch out for Part 2)
Would we ever consider going back to real leathers or faux leathers that are easier to use but made from plastic? Never!

We love every step of the journey:

From researching new materials, to connecting with the wonderful conscious innovators and fabric suppliers to imagining what is possible to create with these beautiful materials.

Our journey is not only about the outcome, but it is about adding real value along the way. It doesn't mean the destination is irrelevant, but the journey shapes the destination.

Sargassum, which is an invasive seaweed plant, that is not adding anything to our eco-systems is used to create this plantbased and plastic free leather alternative.

We are the first designers to work with this outstanding material.
