Accessible travel is about more than whether the destination or activity is accessible. Sometimes, the biggest challenge is simply getting there.
A Free2Go Travel client who uses a wheelchair recently shared a great example after returning from her cruise.
She was able to find excursion options that could work for her, but transportation became the real obstacle. Many of the available taxis were vans that required passengers to climb up into them - something she couldn’t do.
Her family ultimately found an independent excursion provider with a ramp-equipped van, and they were able to enjoy their day in the Dominican Republic.
Her experience is such an important reminder:
When planning an accessible excursion, don’t just ask, “Is the excursion accessible?”
Ask:
“How am I getting there - and is the transportation accessible for me?”
And whenever possible, start asking those questions early. Accessible vehicles can be limited, and a little advance planning may mean more choices once you arrive.
Travel with accessibility needs may require a few more questions, but those questions can make a BIG difference.
