General information

One of the biggest problems we face in our area are vessels running aground on the many shallow banks and shoals that are so plentiful in the best lobster hunting grounds. Please remember to pay close attention to your GPS and depth finder and keep in mind the old saying "brown, brown run aground, white, white you just might, green, green should be clean, blue, blue sail on through". Most of our shallows are marked on the charts and posted with shoal markers, but remeber this is an ever changing environment and what was good when the chart was printed may be shallow now. If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself aground,PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT try to power yourself off. The fines for damaging the bay and reef bottom can be hefty. FWC will not look kindly on boaters who leave prop scars on the sea bed. Your best course of action is to call for assistance from a professional towing provider. If you have boat insurance you probaly have towing coverage and in many cases we can deal direct with your insurance company and avoid any out of pocket expenses to you. Even if you don't have coverage you will find that the bill from Us will be less than the fines that could be imposed by the state for any damage you do. Whatever you do do not attempt to have another recreational boater try and tow you to deeper water using dock or anchor lines. Tow boats and lines are specifically designed for towing. Recreational boats and anchor lines are not. Our boats are equipped with tow posts postioned and designed to allow us to apply large amounts of power to the tow line with out damage to the towing vessel or the strand. The lines we use have many, many times the breaking strain of anchor and dock lines and more importantly they are designed not to streach. Dock lines and anchor lines are designed to streach to absorb the shock of wave motion. Basically they are like a big bungy cord and if you've ever tried pulling something with a bungy cord you know how futile it is, the bungy absorbs most of the power you apply, but that's not the bad part, when a bungy cord reaches it's breaking point it snaps and springs back to the point at which the load is applied. Ever had a rubber band snap and catch your fingers? Imagine a 100 foot, 7/8 inch rubber band snapping under the load of several hundred horsepower and several thousnd pounds of dead weight. Imagine standing close to the point where that load is applied. Not a pretty thought! So remember folks, stay safe, stay legal, have fun and if you do find yourself in need of help we can be reached on VHF channel 16 or by phone on 305-393-4346, 24,7,365
