Brought this old 1986 Evinrude 225 back to life.. full service including 6 new spark plugs, rebuilt all 6 carbs, changed out a few fuel and water lines that were hard and brittle, replaced some old rotten wiring and grounds, re epoxied all the magnets in the flywheel that had come loose, changed out both powerpacks, gave it a new water pump and lower unit oil and pressure/vacuum tested the lower unit seals while I had it off.. over 40 years old and it now starts right up and runs like new again!

18hp hangkai. Customer said it’s been sitting a while and it won’t start. Primed it with fuel and it was leaking pretty bad from a crack in the fuel filter, changed out the filter with a Yamaha filter. Primed it up again, no leaks, started on the 3rd pull.. it was idling pretty good but when you give it throttle the rpms would hang up pretty high and slowly drop back down to idle. Pulled the carb to make sure everything was clean and inspected the reed valves while I had the carb off. 1 reed valve was broken and a couple others weren’t sealing. Swapped the entire reed cage out with an oem Yamaha 15 reed cage and put everything back together. Started it up, tuned the mixture screw and it’s running great.

1999 Johnson 50 that a customer brought in for a service/carb clean.. removed and soda blasted then ultrasonic cleaned both carbs, pulled the lower unit, changed the impeller, drained the oil which had some water in it so I pressure tested the case to find where it got in.. found a little leak around the oil level screw so I replaced that seal then it was good to go, refilled it with fresh gear oil.. reinstalled the carbs and lower unit, synchronized the carbs, put a new set of spark plugs in it, fired it up and made a few carb adjustments and set the idle in gear speed to 800rpms. It’s running great and ready to go fishing!

Today’s project was this 2005 Yamaha 50. Customer said it wouldn’t start so he wanted to get it running and put a new water pump in it.. started out checking spark and compression, good spark on all 3 cylinders and compression readings of 120-115-120 so no problems there.. pulled the carbs, tore them apart and they were pretty nasty, got all 3 cleaned up (soda blasted, and ultrasonic bath for 30 minutes each then blew out all the passages with compressed air) they looked pretty much new afterwards.. remounted them on the motor and synchronized them.. put a new set of Ngk spark plugs in gapped at 1.0 mm.. pulled the lower unit and disassembled the water pump, the housing looked good but the impeller had some broken and cracked fins. But a new impeller and base plate gasket in it.. drained the lower unit and refilled with fresh gear oil. Greased all the lower unit bolts and driveshaft and shift shaft splines before reassembly. Primed the fuel system and checked for leaks, all good. Ran water to it and it fired right up, after a few carb adjustments and a test run on the river this ones ready to go!

Spent most of today working on this 1989 Yamaha pro50. It had a couple of issues that needed fixing, the steering cable was stuck in the tilt tube, someone tried to hammer it through and mushroomed the end, kept hammering until the mushroomed end was inside the tilt tube so that it was really stuck and the tilt/trim was not working, just a click when you hit the switch.. started with the stuck steering cable, I decided the best route was to cut the steering cable and replace the tilt tube and put a new steering cable on it.. a lot of penetrating oil, a little heat from a propane torch and some hammering and it came out fairly easily, got the new tilt tube installed, new steering cable installed and on to problem #2.. I bypassed the relays for the tilt/trim motor and put power straight to the motor, nothing so that confirms the motor is bad, pulled the motor off the boat to access the rear bolt on the tilt/trim motor, got it pulled off and a new one ordered, I’ll finish this one up as soon as the new tilt/trim motor gets here..
