is today! This day honors the craft and resilience of brick as one of the world’s oldest, most durable, and sustainable building materials.

We make brick because we love the craft, but also because we respect its resilience. When people say, “brick is timeless,” they mean it. Here’s why:

Brick has been in use for over 9,000 years. Brick structures last for centuries - check out the “Tower of Jericho.” Clay brick is reusable and recyclable, as “grog” an essential ingredient to make new brick.

The fire resistance and thermal efficiency of brick is extraordinary. Its high thermal mass allows the material to regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing and storing heat.

Red bricks are among the oldest colors, with examples dating back to roughly 4400 BCE in China. The iconic red color is caused by iron oxide in the clay turning bright red when fired.

Please enjoy some of our favorite projects featuring classic reds made by Summit on this special day, and thank you to the Architects, Masons, and Owners that continue to choose brick for legacy buildings across the states:

Sedona Fire Station 6 and Tolleson Fire Station by LEA-Architects (beautiful municipal works reflecting their landscapes)

The Golden Gateway Center by Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons (WBE) and DeMars & Reay in San Francisco (avant garde shapes, multi-tiered landscaped plazas, and elevated walkways to create a residential network of 1,400 units).

The Buell Children’s Museum and Sangre de Cristo Arts Center by HGF Architects, Inc. (playful re-imaginations of brick design into curves and artful detailing)

1515 Wynkoop by Hartman Cox Architects (classic mixed-use design in Downtown Denver)

Thayer House in Chicago gives residential brick design new life - Throughout the day, patterns of light shift across the facade. New & different patterns every day, every season.

Studio Dwell Architects chose “Chicago Smooth,” which is our flashed light gold. Typically, we tumble this brick, but the crisp edges of the non-tumbled version are striking in this arrangement. Thank you, Studio Dwell Architects! It is inspiring to see an “old school” material reimagined ✨✨
