Falls Creek has a new landmark this winter. The Flower of the Alpine Sun - a golden orb sculpture by Italian urban artist Gio Veronesi - now stands over ten metres tall near Cloud 9 cafe, sitting above 1,600 metres elevation and ranking among the highest altitude public artworks in Australia.

Five years in the making and funded by the Victorian Government, it doubles as a viewing platform into the Alpine National Park and anchors a growing art programme at the resort.

The Flower of the Alpine Sun, a 10m golden sculpture by Gio Veronesi, is now installed at Falls Creek for the 2026 snow season.

South America's 2026 ski season hasn't opened yet, but the Andes are already picking up serious early-season snow. OpenSnow's Powder Finder is showing the central Andes leading the way, with Portillo forecast at 89 cm and Valle Nevado at 69 cm through Friday. Corralco and Antillanca are also showing strong numbers further south. Lifts are still down across the region, so this is a base-building event - but it's a strong start to what could be a solid season.

Construction has started on a new 10-person gondola at Samnaun, the Swiss entry point to the cross-border Silvretta Ski Arena Ischgl/Samnaun. The Laret-Champs-Muller lift connects lower-lying hamlets directly to the ski area with a midway station adding flexibility on the slopes. It opens for winter 2027. Here's what's being built.

A two-seater chairlift from 1981 is making way for a 10-person gondola in St. Johann in Tirol - and if you never rode the old Jodlalm double chair, you missed something. Construction is underway now, capacity jumps from a crawl to 2,400 people per hour, and the new gondola runs direct to the Harschbichl summit at 1,603m without a transfer.

Opening planned for winter 2026-27. The chairs from the old lift were sold off - someone's getting a unique garden feature.

One of the main cable cars into Mürren just got a serious upgrade. The Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp aerial cableway has been fully renovated and reopens 11 July 2026 - new 135-person cabin (up from 100), new drive systems, new valley station layout with separated passenger flows, and an on-site energy storage system. After 478,500 passengers in 2025 alone, the capacity boost is well overdue.

Zermatt's Matterhorn Ski Paradise is replacing the Patrullarve chairlift this summer - the oldest lift in the ski area, having operated since 1989. The replacement is a detachable six-seater built on Leitner's Ropera technology, targeting completion before the 2026-27 season. Construction is underway now in the Patrullarve-Sunnegga-Blauherd area.

Timberline Lodge has scrapped its long-planned gondola project and is replacing it with something more skier-focused: two new chairlifts on the lower mountain, plus a new base lodge. The gondola was meant to physically connect Timberline and Summit Pass - acquired back in 2018 - but the resort has decided a lift-based solution better suits its long-term operations. Still needs Forest Service approval before anything gets built.
