WAPT Members,
SB 6260 has now passed through the House, is currently in the Senate, and is scheduled for a public hearing tomorrow at 8:00 AM in the House Committee on Appropriations. We are at a critical point, and WAPT must have a LOUD, unified voice if we are going to stop this bill.
In addition to extending the school bus depreciation schedule to 15 years, the bill now also specifies that any payment a district receives from a grant or rebate for buses will be deducted from that district’s depreciation payments. This effectively penalizes districts for pursuing grants and rebates, reducing already limited funds for safe and timely bus replacement.
What you can do – in person or virtually
If you are able to be in Olympia tomorrow:
Please come to the Capitol and sign in as OPPOSED to SB 6260, even if you cannot stay for the entire hearing. Your physical presence and opposition on the record are powerful.
If you cannot attend in person:
Please sign in virtually through the House Committee Sign-In system and submit written testimony in opposition. Even brief comments that highlight the real-world impacts to your district’s fleet, safety, and budgeting are extremely valuable.
Online sign-in and testimony portal (House): https://app.leg.wa.gov/csi/house[app.leg.wa]
Once on the site:

Choose the hearing date 3/5 and 8:00 AM time.[app.leg.wa]
Select SB 6260 – Implementing efficiencies and programming changes in public education.
Choose your testimony type:
“I would like my position noted for the record” (quick and easy – mark your position as CON), or
“I would like to submit written testimony” (attach or paste your statement), or
“I would like to testify live during the hearing” (in person or remotely, if available).povertyaction+1
Enter your information and submit.
Every individual action adds up: sign in as OPPOSED, submit written testimony, encourage colleagues to do the same, and join in person if you can. We must do everything we can, right now, to protect districts from the harmful and unintended consequences of this bill.
Thank you for standing up for safe, sustainable, and financially responsible student transportation in Washington.
With appreciation,
