The Texas Colorado River entirely separate from the Colorado River of the American West -runs approximately 862 miles from near Lubbock to Matagorda Bay.

The Lower Colorado River Authority manages the Highland Lakes reservoirs that supply water to Austin.

The river's water rights are contested between agricultural upstream users and the growing Austin metropolitan area.

In 1950, a man named Harmon Dobson opened a canvas tent on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, and started selling hamburgers for twenty-five cents. He wanted the burgers to be big enough that when you took a bite you'd say "What a burger!" He put that name on the sign. 🍔

Dobson's original Corpus Christi tent operation was almost purely instinct: a large patty, a large bun, made fresh when you ordered it. The idea was simple but the ex*****on was specific. He was not trying to be McDonald's, which was already operating by then. He was trying to make something that felt worth the quarter, something substantial and honest.

The tent became a building, the building became a chain, and the chain became something only Texas can really produce: an institution with genuine emotional weight. Whataburger expanded through the Gulf Coast and then across the South and Southwest over the following decades. The orange and white A-frame buildings became as Texan as anything in the landscape. The chain was sold in 2019, but headquarters stayed in San Antonio, and the loyalty of its customers remained undisturbed. Harmon Dobson died in a plane crash in 1967, but the thing he built on a Corpus Christi street corner is still going. 🤘
