✈️ How long has Angel Flight Central been flying passengers?

Since 1995, Angel Flight Central has helped patients and families reach medical care through the kindness of volunteer pilots.

It all started with Kansas City pilot Jim Stevens and a simple question: how can we help?

After retiring early for health reasons, Jim began thinking about how he could use something he already knew and loved, flying, to help people who needed a way to reach care. That idea became Wings Over Mid-America, which would later become Angel Flight Central.

In that first year, the goal was to fly 12 flights. They reached that goal in the first month.

More than 31 years later, Angel Flight Central continues to carry that same heart forward. Every flight is a reminder of what can happen when someone sees a need and steps forward!

Rochester is a place Angel Flight Central volunteer pilots know well!

Throughout the year, many AFC passengers travel to Rochester for medical appointments at Mayo Clinic , and volunteer pilots like Fernando help make those trips a little easier.

Michael and his wife, Heather, recently flew back to Kansas City from Rochester thanks to Fernando’s help.

✈️ How long does Angel Flight Central need to coordinate a flight?

It’s a great question, and the answer comes down to care, coordination, and giving each request the best chance possible. We ask for 5–7 business days to coordinate a flight once a completed request has been submitted and our team has had a chance to review it.

Angel Flight Central is not an emergency service. Our flights are arranged for scheduled medical appointments, and each request takes time to review and coordinate.

Our 5–7 business day timeline begins once a completed flight request has been submitted, and our team has had a chance to review it. Before a flight can be shared with our volunteer pilots, our flight coordination team confirms appointment details, reviews the medical release signed by the passenger’s physician, and looks through the details of the request to make sure a small, non-pressurized aircraft is the best option.

Another important part of the process is that our pilots are never assigned flights.

Instead, flight requests are posted for our volunteer pilots to review, and pilots choose the missions they are able to fly based on their schedule, location, and aircraft. The more time we have to post a flight, the more opportunity pilots have to see it and volunteer.

We know medical travel can come with a lot of moving pieces, and our goal is always to help make the flight process feel as clear and supported as possible.

If you or someone you know may need a flight to scheduled medical care, reaching out early is one of the best things you can do. Even if you do not have every detail yet, starting the conversation early can help our team guide you through what is needed and when to submit your request.

When you live in a rural community, medical care can feel a long way from home.

For many rural families, getting care is not as simple as making an appointment. The right specialist, hospital, or transplant team may be hours away, and one visit can mean a long day on the road, missed work, extra costs, and a tired child in the back seat.

Over time, that distance becomes more than an inconvenience. It can be why families miss appointments.

For Bella and her grandma, traveling from a rural community 90 miles outside of Rapid City to Minneapolis would have meant nearly eight hours of driving one way for care after Bella’s liver transplant. With help from Angel Flight Central volunteer pilot Kirk Evenson and other volunteer pilots, that long day of travel was shortened to just a few hours in the air.

Instead of spending the day on the road, Bella and her grandma were able to fly.

For rural families, flights like this can make specialized care feel more within reach. They help take away some of the weight of travel, so families can focus on getting their loved one the care they need.

✈️ What’s the difference between high-wing and low-wing planes?

These Angel Flight Central passengers are a great example of something you may notice when flying with AFC, that not every small aircraft looks the same.

In the first photo, our passengers are standing in front of a high-wing plane, meaning the wings are attached above the cabin. These aircraft can feel a little more like stepping into a small car or SUV. Passengers are often able to step up from the ground and into the cabin.

In the second photo, they are standing in front of a low-wing plane, meaning the wings are attached below the cabin. With many low-wing aircraft, passengers step onto the wing first, then carefully lower themselves into the seat. A low-wing plane requires more balance and mobility to get in and out safely.

Because Angel Flight Central flights are flown by volunteer pilots using their own aircraft, each flight can look a little different. One pilot may fly a high-wing plane, while another may fly a low-wing plane. Pilots are never assigned to a flight, they sign up as their schedule and aircraft allow. Your Flight Coordinator may ask you questions about your mobility or that of your companions to ensure that whatever aircraft signs up to fly, you are able to board safely.

At Angel Flight Central, our board members don't just support the mission, they live it!

Volunteer pilots and board members Bill Keen and Joe Ratterman recently brought Tom home from Denver to Kansas City. While they help guide Angel Flight Central as board members, they also continue to spend their time in the cockpit helping passengers get where they need to be.

We're grateful for volunteers like Bill and Joe who give their time to make these flights possible and help ease the burden of travel for our passengers.

✈️ What kind of aircraft do Angel Flight Central volunteer pilots use?

Most Angel Flight Central missions are flown in small, single-engine aircraft that typically seat four to six people. Some of our volunteer pilots also fly larger twin-engine airplanes, like the one pictured here!

Every flight is a little different, so the aircraft used depends on which volunteer pilot is available and best able to help with the trip. Because our pilots donate both their time and their aircraft, passengers don't choose a specific plane or pilot. Instead, we match each flight request with a volunteer who is ready to lend a hand.
No matter what airplane you're in, every flight is powered by the kindness of volunteer pilots who are helping neighbors get where they need to go. ❤️
One of the unique parts of flying with Angel Flight Central is getting to experience general aviation up close. If you fly with us more than once, there's a good chance you'll travel in a few different types of aircraft and meet several of the generous pilots who make these flights possible.

Tammy travels from Hatton, North Dakota to the City of Hope in Chicago for immunotherapy, and on this trip, she was flown by volunteer pilot Chuck!

Each flight is different, but they all share the same purpose, helping passengers get to the care they need, thanks to generous volunteer pilots who donate their time and aircraft.

We are so grateful for Chuck and all of our volunteer pilots who help make it possible for patients like Tammy to reach the care they need. 💛

Sarah needed to travel from Omaha to Salt Lake City to receive a prosthetic eye after almost two years of waiting. Through our partnership with Southwest Airlines, we’re able to help passengers travel long distances by providing free flights when trips are too far to fly by small plane with our volunteer pilots!

Cub Scout Pack 61 from Wheaton, Illinois, recently came together to create care packages for Angel Flight Central passengers. An incredibly thoughtful gesture that reflects the spirit of giving back in honor of volunteer pilot Marc Damon and the impact he made in his community.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life. Thank you to volunteer pilot Bob Hamilton for connecting with the scouts and sharing more about our mission, and to volunteer pilot Mikael Asfoor for flying the donated supplies to Kansas City.

Because of this effort, our passengers will receive care packages filled with thoughtful items to make their journey a little more comfortable.
