A federal executive order signed by the President temporarily permits the use of red-dyed diesel (historically restricted strictly to off-road agricultural, construction, and heating purposes) on public highways through December 31, 2026.
Volvo Trucks understands the federal government's intent in seeking ways to lower operating costs for our customers. At the same time, it is important to note that we have not tested red-dyed fuel for on-highway applications. Therefore, we refer customers to the specifications in their owner's manual, that states diesel engines designed for 2007 and later model year vehicles should only be operated with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel (max 15ppm sulfur) which conforms to ASTM D975 S15, and is fresh and clean. The use of fuel that does not meet these approved standards can reduce engine efficiency/durability, damage emission control systems, reduce fuel economy, and may. result in the denial of warranty claims.
Specifically, Texas has received a Clean Air Act waiver from the EPA allowing Texas to sell diesel with up to 500ppm sulfur. Please note that our engines should NOT be operated with:
β’ S500 Grades Low Sulfur Diesel containing up to 500 ppm sulfur
β’ S5000 Grades High Sulfur Diesel containing up to 5,000 ppm sulfur
β’ No. 4-D heavy distillate
β’ Residual blends for low- and medium-speed engines
