SWAPA Southwest Airlines Pilots Association is the sole bargaining unit for the 11,000+ Pilots of SWA.

Southwest Pilots are leaders in aviation industry productivity and are the world’s leading experts on flying the Boeing-737. Southwest Airlines operates a growing fleet of the 737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX-8. SWAPA is in its 42nd year of service to the more than 11,000 Pilots of Southwest Airlines. Prior to the union’s beginnings in 1978, Pilots worked cooperatively with the Company to compile work rules for safe, efficient operations. That cooperative spirit has continued through the negotiation of eight labor contracts.

For the past three years, MDW First Officer Matthew Spychalski has traded the flight deck for the South Side of Chicago, helping young people see aviation as a career within reach.
Through Project H.O.O.D.’s (Helping Others Obtain Destiny) AviNation American Dream Tour, Matthew and other aerospace volunteers spent the day sharing their experiences, answering questions, and giving kids a glimpse of where a career in aviation can take them.
His favorite part? The questions.
“They always come up with the most creative questions, and, honestly, I get more out of the event than I think they do.”
We’re proud of Pilots like Matthew who show up, share their experiences, and help the next generation see just how far aviation can take them.
