Have you been to the Museo Larco in Lima? 🇵🇪

It’s one of those places that completely changes how you look at ancient Peru.

Inside this beautiful museum are thousands of years of pre-Columbian art, ceramics, textiles, gold and silver, each piece telling a little more of the story of the civilizations that flourished here long before the Inca.

And then there’s the famous Erotic Gallery. It may be what gets people talking, but there’s far more to it than first meets the eye. Much of the collection, particularly the remarkable Moche ceramics, explores fertility, life and death, nature, ritual and the relationship between this world and the world of the ancestors.

Some of it will make you look twice. 😄 But viewed through the beliefs of ancient Andean cultures, these pieces weren’t simply provocative. They were part of a much bigger story about life, renewal and the mysteries of existence.

That’s what I love about the Larco Museum. You don’t just walk around looking at beautiful objects. You leave understanding ancient Peru a little better.

To our travellers and friends, we’re closely following the flooding in Bangkok and staying in regular contact with our local team. Some communities have been badly affected by the recent heavy rain, and our thoughts are very much with everyone dealing with flooding, damaged homes, disrupted travel and difficult conditions.

For travellers, both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports remain open and operating. Public transport is largely running, although some roads and journeys across Bangkok continue to be affected, so extra travel time is advised.

Our local partners are monitoring conditions on the ground, and at this time none of our Serene Journeys travellers or programmes have been impacted.

We’ll continue to keep a close watch on the situation and make any necessary adjustments with the safety and comfort of our travellers in mind.

“I am in freakin’ Hanoi, Vietnam!”

That was one of those moments when everything suddenly became real.

David, one of our travellers recently left this wonderful review after joining our Four Kingdoms journey through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos, and honestly, this is exactly why we do what we do.

Four countries can mean a lot of moving parts: international flights, local flights, airports, customs, different currencies, hotels, reservations, local guides, transport and all the small details that can make a big trip feel overwhelming.

Our job was to take care of those things so he could focus on the part that mattered most: being there.

Hanoi. Halong Bay. Angkor Wat. Bangkok. The Mekong River. Laos. Ancient temples. Night markets. Cooking classes. Local food. Hidden speakeasies. Fashion districts. Free time to wander through Hanoi, Bangkok and Siem Reap.

FREE one-week stay in Bangkok? Yes, you read that correctly.

We are thinking of giving away a 6 Nights / 7 Days stay at our Bangkok condo for a couple, a family, or up to 4 friends.

It is a 2-bedroom condo on the 34th floor, with a sweeping view of Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River. I won’t call it high-end luxury, because that would be overselling it, but it is very much our kind of place. Comfortable, boutique, personal, and in one of the most exciting cities in Asia.

Here’s the idea.

You stay for free. You wake up to Bangkok views. You eat well. You explore properly. You don’t just “do Bangkok.” You actually experience it.

The catch?

All tours, sightseeing, transfers, and travel planning must be arranged through Serene Journeys.

Bangkok can be the whole trip, or just the beginning. And this is where it gets fun, because Southeast Asia is wonderfully easy to connect when planned well.

Luang Prabang is about 2 hours 10 minutes from Bangkok, with cheaper one-way flights often starting around US$100.

Siem Reap for Angkor Wat is about 1 hour 20 minutes away, with lower fares often starting around US$95 one way.

Hanoi is about 2 hours away, with return fares sometimes starting from around US$95.

Da Nang for Hoi An is around 1 hour 45 minutes away, with return fares sometimes starting around US$120.

Ho Chi Minh City is about 1 hour 30 minutes away.

Chiang Mai is about 1 hour 20 minutes away, and perfect if you want temples, food, mountains, markets, and a softer northern Thailand pace.

Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, and the islands are also easy add-ons for anyone who wants to end with beaches, boats, and a very serious lack of responsibility.

So one free week in Bangkok could become a lovely little Southeast Asia holiday.

Today feels like a good day to think about freedom, and also the kind of travel that makes us appreciate it a little more.
