Respect for Fish Day, August 1, 2020 is an annual event organized to raise awareness about the plight of fish. Fish are the planet’s most widely abused animals, but their suffering receives the least attention. Trillions of fish are mistreated and killed every year in the food industry, for sport, in the pet trade, and in laboratories. Although scientific evidence has conclusively demonstrated that fish are capable of feeling pain, fish are largely perceived as insentient and seldom covered by animal welfare legislation. Respect for Fish Day hopes to change this by making the general public and lawmakers realize that fish are deserving of the same compassion and protection granted to any other animal.

This year, Respect for Fish Day is dedicated to Regan Russell's memory.

Friday Activism!
🌟 Horse carriage- at discovery green from 6 PM - 8 PM. Join Houston Animal Rights Activists shed light on the conditions & treatment Horses endure on Houston Downtown streets. 🗣✊ The only ones who profit are the owners 💵

These Horses are forced to pull up to six people at a time not including the drivers and carriages weight
Horses pull all this weight from 15-40 min at a time up to or longer than 8 hours!

They have to dodge heavy, dangerous traffic on loud, busy streets, with cars going in every direction. Horses get no break from inhaling carbon monoxide consistently. 😵🤢☠️🚗🚙🚕 Accidents waiting to happen. Horses are sensitive and skittish animals who don’t willingly want to be there

HORSES BELONG ON FIELDS NOT ON STREETS🌾🐴🌾 Signs will be provided but you are encouraged to bring your own
Last protest 6/14 Horse Carriage drivers have decided to move locations back and forth

We will be getting to downtown and scoping out the scene until 30 min before the protest to update everyone where they are located.
We still request you park in the surrounding area of Discovery Green Park

We will shuttle activists to whatever location the Horse Drawn Carriages are at.
DM us for any questions or concerns
😘💖 ——————————————
Then right after the horse carriage protest, there will be a cube of truth at discovery green from 8 Pm to 10 pm. See you all there! 🖤🖤

(Circo Hermanos Vazquez) has failed to meet minimum federal standards for the care of animals used in exhibition as established in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA)
🎪🎟🚫
This circus was BANNED from their own country, Mexico, for using animals. It’s illegal to use animals in circuses in Mexico
🇲🇽
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cited Circo Hermanos Vazquez numerous times for failing to provide adequate veterinary care, failing to produce complete documented programs of veterinary care, and failing to meet minimum space requirements, which, in one incident, resulted in the death of a tiger
🐅
An inspection performed in 2003 revealed that Circo Hermanos Vazquez had not updated a program of veterinary care since 1999

In many of the slaughterhouses of U.S. and Canadian chicken suppliers for McDonald's, birds are dumped out of their transport crates and hung upside down in metal shackles—which can result in broken bones, extreme bruising, and hemorrhaging. Workers often abuse live animals, and eyewitnesses have seen birds' throats cut while they're still conscious and birds immersed in tanks of scalding-hot water while they're still alive and able to feel pain. This cruelty would be illegal if dogs or cats—or even pigs or cows—were the victims.

Making horses pull oversized loads like carriages is cruel. Horses are forced to toil in all weather extremes, dodge traffic, and pound the pavement all day long. They may develop respiratory ailments because they breathe in exhaust fumes, and they can suffer debilitating leg problems from walking on hard surfaces
Horses are afforded no protection under the federal Animal Welfare Act, so the responsibility of looking out for their welfare falls to local animal-control officials. But anti-cruelty laws provide few safeguards to horses, and many humane agencies just don’t have the resources or the time to monitor horse-drawn carriages on a regular basis. Animals can easily be overworked when profit-driven operators fail to follow regulations
Horses are sensitive and skittish animals. Animals and people have been seriously hurt—and even killed—when horses have become spooked and run amok.

There have also been countless incidents in which carriages have been hit by impatient or careless drivers. Accidents have occurred in nearly every city where carriage rides are allowed

Vigils For Regan

Animal rights activist Regan Russell, 65, was struck and killed by a pig transport truck in front of Fearmans slaughterhouse on Friday, June 19, 2020. Regan was at a Toronto Pig Save vigil with 6 other activists giving pigs water on a scorching hot day. She regularly attended pig vigils and on this particular day Regan was there to oppose Ontario ag gag Bill 156, which had passed two days prior. Regan died trying to expose what Bill 156 will hide. Regan was born and raised in Hamilton and moved to Winnipeg where she became a model. She was an animal activist since 1979 and enjoyed spending time with the family’s seven rescue cats. Her husband Mark calls for continued fight against animal abuse:

Regan believed all life was “worth fighting for” say grieving friends and family. A long time social justice activist, she was arrested on 11 occasions for “various acts of civil disobedience”.

“People say we’re breaking the law … How do you think women got the right (to vote)? How do you think slavery was abolished?” Russell asked rhetorically. “People stood up and broke the laws — because they’re stupid laws.”
