Yesterday in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, we trekked into the Virunga Mountains to spend an extraordinary hour with the Kwitonda mountain gorilla family.

After hiking up through thick bamboo and mountain forest, suddenly there they were–three enormous silverbacks (we saw 3 of this family’s 4), mothers with babies, and youngsters climbing and tumbling through the vegetation, all carrying on with their day just a few feet away from us.

Mountain gorillas survive only here in the Virunga Massif and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Their recovery is one of conservation’s genuine success stories: decades of intensive protection have helped their numbers slowly increase, and Rwanda’s carefully controlled gorilla tourism provides critical funding for conservation while also bringing tourism revenue to communities surrounding the park.

Our October 2026 Kenyan safari just wrapped up with a fantastic visit to Maasai Mara, part of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. We had the privilege of spending time with big cats here—leopards, lions, and cheetahs! We enjoyed time with hyenas, elephants, hippos, and all manner of antelope. And let’s not forget the migration superstars, zebra and wildebeest!

Another wonderful morning at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi Nursery, where orphaned baby elephants come charging in for their 11 AM milk feeding!

Sheldrick has been rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants for decades, giving them the intensive care, companionship, and round-the-clock attention they need to survive. Eventually, these youngsters graduate to reintegration centers, where they gradually learn to live independently in the wild.

We also visited two rather unlikely best friends: Tytan, a young black rhino, and Notty, a zebra. Both lost their mothers in tragic falls from cliffs and were rescued just a week apart in September 2025. They’ve been inseparable ever since, apparently unaware that rhinos and zebras aren’t traditionally known for their close friendships. ❤️

Our October Safari drives in Buffalo Springs took us through the beautiful landscapes of Kenya’s greater Samburu ecosystem. We spotted all of the Samburu Special Five (Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich) plus plenty of spectacular vulturine guineafowl and even a brief glimpse of an elusive young leopard. We even had evening drinks with seven lovely lionesses! Plus we saw elephants shaking the doum palms for loose fruit ❤️

Yesterday our October Safari crew visited Umoja, the remarkable women’s village in Samburu.

Founded in 1990 as a refuge for women escaping female ge***al mutilation, child marriage, domestic violence, and other abuses, Umoja has grown into a community built and run by women. Through their beadwork, the women support themselves and a primary school that also serves children from surrounding villages.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy in central Kenya is both a wildlife conservancy and a sanctuary for endangered animals, with one of the largest populations of black rhinos in East Africa. It is also home to Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. We had the incredible privilege of visiting them while we were there. 🦏❤️
