At approximately 12:55 this morning, FRFD was dispatched to Titan Tire for a report of smoke coming from the roof. Freeport Fire Department is on automatic aid with Tower 3 and responded with us.

Upon arrival, smoke was confirmed coming from the roof, and a fire was located in a powered roof vent. Freeport Rural crews handled the interior attack while Freeport City Fire handled the exterior attack from the roof.

Once the fire was extinguished, members from both departments worked together on the roof, using thermal imaging cameras to check the surrounding area and make sure there were no additional hot spots before giving the all clear.

As always, we appreciate the help and teamwork from Freeport City Fire. We were especially thankful for Tower 3 when it was time to come back down! Walking down the aerial was a whole lot more enjoyable than climbing back down the enclosed roof access ladder with air packs on. The FRFD members who made the trip to the roof definitely appreciated the easier way down!

Tonight at the Stephenson County Fair Truck & Tractor Pulls, we're fortunate to have three members of the Kubatzke family volunteering with the Freeport Rural Fire Department.

Jerry and Tammy are second-generation FRFD volunteer firefighters, continuing a family tradition of service. Rachel represents the third generation and recently earned her EMT certification. She hopes to join a career fire department in the future, and we're proud to have her as part of our team.

Today, volunteers with the Freeport Rural Fire Department are trackside at the Stephenson County Fair for the FFA Truck & Tractor Pulls. 🚒🚜

We'll also be here this evening for the Midwest Summer Nationals, along with several of the other events throughout the week!

Tonight was Station 1's monthly drill, but this one came with a surprise.

While we were sitting at the station discussing fireground operations, the tones dropped for a reported structure fire at 4500 W. Pearl City Road. The dispatch was for a two story house with two people trapped on the second floor. What most of us didn't know was that Station 3 had planned a surprise training scenario.

As soon as the tones dropped, everyone jumped into action. Most members from station 1 responded in their personal vehicles while the engine and tanker were intentionally delayed by six minutes to simulate volunteers arriving at the station, getting geared up, and getting the trucks on the road.

When crews arrived, our two story training structure was filled with smoke, and two "occupants" were inside. Crews quickly sized up the scene, made entry, located both occupants, and brought them out safely.

A big thank you to Station 3 for putting this together. Drills like this keep us sharp, build teamwork, and help make sure we're ready when the real call comes in.

The Freeport Rural Fire Protection District would like to inform the community that ambulance service rates will be increasing effective 7/1/2026.

This adjustment reflects the rising costs associated with providing high-quality emergency medical services, including ambulance maintenance, medical equipment, training, staffing, and the resources needed to ensure our crews are prepared to respond when you need us most.

We remain committed to delivering prompt, professional, and compassionate emergency medical services to our community. We understand that changes in service fees impact residents and patients, and we have worked to ensure that rates remain aligned with the costs associated with providing quality ambulance services.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work to provide the best possible emergency response and patient care.

New Effective Rates:
Public Assist - $250
BLS - $2,100
ALS - $2,400

Earlier this evening, FRFD responded to a MABAS alarm for a barn fire with Orangeville Volunteer Fire Dept. FRFD was requested to provide a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT).

A Rapid Intervention Team is a dedicated crew that stands ready to immediately locate, assist, and remove firefighters who become trapped, lost, injured, or otherwise in distress while operating in hazardous environments.

Our hearts go out to the family affected by tonight's fire. Losing property and belongings is never easy, and we wish them the very best as they begin the recovery process.

We would like to thank Orangeville Fire for requesting our assistance and for their continued partnership. Rural is always ready to answer the call whenever our neighboring departments need a hand.

On Wednesday, May 20, we lost one of our founding members, Lee Runte. His 60+ years of service as a Firefighter and Trustee are deeply appreciated and fondly remembered. He was known to still show up Sunday mornings for standby, especially if there was popcorn and a good conversation about local farms. His contagious smile accompanied the pride he still shared for the Fire Department.
