-Do no insult people, including those who surrender their pets or the shelter staff. We will delete any posts that insult another person, threaten legal action against a person, or want to complain about how the Animal Shelter is run. If you feel that you have an issue with the Macon County Animal Shelter, contact John Hook, the Director, at 828-349-2106.
-We reserve the right to block anyone with inappropriate language, breeders (puppy mills and kitten mills) or animal hoarders. Yes, word does get around.
-Please do assist the Shelter in returning pets back to their homes. If an animal is picked up with no tag or microchip, it's difficult to locate the owners unless they come in to the Shelter or see the note on here.
-Call the Shelter to inquire about specific animals. They know what animals are currently available or when they will be available. The page administrators probably don't. If you are part of a 501(c)(3) organization and want to rescue an animal, please coordinate with the Shelter staff, who can tell you of any other efforts that might be going on. -For your protection, we cannot permit anyone other than the page administrators to post fund raising info here. Please do not donate to anyone else soliciting money for pets at the Shelter.
-Please know that the Shelter is a low-kill facility. Most adoptable dogs and 75% of adoptable cats eventually find homes. The Staff makes every effort to place animals, including foster homes and transports to the Northeast U.S. and Florida. Unfortunately, there are some animals that have to be humanely euthanized due to temperament, or life-threatening illnesses. Each animal adopted from the Shelter has been spayed or neutered and given a wellness exam by a veterinarian.
-Although the Shelter is funded by Macon County, it still needs help from volunteers, including those who are willing to foster an animal or to sponsor an animal (pay the adoption fee) so that its life is prolonged until a home can be found for it.
-Finally, the Shelter is not associated with the Macon County Humane Society or Appalachian Animal Rescue. They are a great bunch of people and we're not in competition with them. The goal of both organizations and their volunteers is to find homes for animals and return lost animals to their owners.
