Last night, the final signal along the Route 28 corridor, north of Route 29, was decommissioned as part of the Transform 66 project. This marks another important early milestone achieved on the project and will allow for freer flow of traffic on Route 28 while work continues on the redesigned I-66/Route 28 interchange. Congratulations to our colleagues at FAM Construction!

We’re working hard to make your travel experience on I-66 safer and more reliable. We want to thank the more than 200 people who attended our virtual construction update meetings this week. It was a great forum to keep you updated and answer your questions. Both meetings were recorded and can be found on the project website if you were not able to join us live or if you want to share with friends and neighbors. The meeting from night 1 (update from Bull Run to Waples Mill Road) can be found here: http://outside.transform66.org/news_events/meetings/10282020_waplesmilltobullrun.asp and the meeting from night 2 (update from Jermantown Road to I-495) can be found here: http://outside.transform66.org/news_events/meetings/10292020_waplesmillto495.asp. The new project video that shows the future configuration of the new express lanes and other features being built along the corridor can also be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfW46hnIBUY&feature=youtu.be.”

Our colleagues at FAM Construction had a very productive summer setting beams on 14 bridges throughout the project corridor. The beam lifts required significant coordination to keep traffic moving on I-66 and took advantage of a maintenance shutdown of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail tracks that run in the center median of the project corridor. Check out this video to hear from some of the project team who work hard daily to transform I-66!

We have conducted more than 300 meetings with community organizations, homeowner groups and advocacy groups to provide information on the Transform66 project. Keeping the public informed while keeping social distance has required some flexibility and creativity.

Last week our project team was pleased to deliver a virtual update via Zoom to 40 members of the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling (FABB) with information on the new trails being built as part of the I-66 project.

For #ConstructionAppreciationWeek, we are highlighting the progress being made on the new Braddock Walney overpass at Route 28, as part of the I-66 Outside the Beltway Project. When this overpass is opened in the coming months, we know area drivers will appreciate less congestion to get safely to their destination. #transform66

Concrete deck pour - new Route 123 bridge over I-66

Did you know that the original Chain Bridge over the Potomac River was a P3 project? In 1794, a charter was granted to the Georgetown Potomac Bridge Company and the bridge opened in 1797. The toll was 3 cents for a pedestrian and 8 cents for a man and a horse. The foundation was made of square mossy stones held together by iron pins and melted lead, and Chain Bridge Road evolved as a major transportation artery in Northern Virginia over the next 226 years.

The new state-of-the-art Chain Bridge Road interchange at I-66 will offer full connectivity to the east and west bound Express Lanes.
