Ocotillo Dye Studio This page is basically just an archive, now. For my current work, check out https://www.facebook.com/WindcarvedDesigns/ And the rest, as they say, is history.

About me: I'm the mom of a fun toddler, who inadvertently got this whole thing started. I've played with dyeing ever since I was a Camp Fire kid, when our group did tie dye and then batik, but I never really explored beyond that until I dyed my very first babywearing wrap. After a while I felt the urge to do another dye, and stumbled upon the art of shibori, and that really piqued my interest. Sin

ce we live in the desert, I strive to use as little water as possible in the dyeing process. As such, I am attempting to do things other than grad dyes which, although gorgeous, take up insane amounts of water. If you choose a Low Water Immersion (LWI) dye, I can have a pretty quick turnaround, but Shibori takes a lot of time to stitch up, especially as wrap sizes go up, so talk with me if you're interested in a shibori piece, and I'll let you know how soon I could have it ready. I love combining shibori and LWI techniques as well, so feel free to consider that when dreaming up your wrap. Prices:
Stripping:
-$25 for any size wrap.
-Due to the fact that stripping can compromise the safety of stitching, webbing and buckles, I cannot strip other carrier types. LWI dyes (1-3 colors, $5 more for each additional color)
-ring sling: $35
-size 1-4: $45
-size 5-8: $55
-other carriers: $50

Shibori (Single color, $5 more for each additional color)
-ring sling: $70
-sizes 1-2: $80
-size 3-4: $90
-size 5-6: $100
-size 7-8: $110
-let's talk about if we can do your shibori on another carrier type

Prices do not include shipping. Because each of my pieces is done by hand, and the colors mixed from scratch, they are truly one-of-a-kind, and may contain small irregularities which are the mark of all hand-crafted things. Please bear this in mind when you decide to have something dyed by me or any other dyer.

I'm having so much fun with the silk and indigo that I think I'm going to make it a permanent fixture. What do you want to see in silk? Rainbow Playsilks? Blue sets of Playsilks? Long, thin scarves? Square scarves? Sarongs? Something else?

Indigo is so COOL! I can't wait to finish tying up some more things to dip, and I may have found a new obsession.

Playing with some silk hankies with procion dye (soda ash method) on top right, bottom left and right. The top left corner was my LO's turn to try it (with food coloring). I'm not impressed by the food coloring method on the silks, all the colors but blue eventually washed out, but it was a fun project for the toddler.
