We recently submitted a Letter to the Editor about fire department staffing and why it matters to our community.

Right now, our staffing levels don’t match the demands of the job.

A union is calling for York Area United Fire and Rescue (YAUFR) to send at least 3 firefighters on fire engines, saying crews now are often just 2.

How much is a life worth?

The damaged hood and mask in these photos are the result of inadequate staffing.

When fire apparatus are not staffed properly, critical tasks cannot happen at the same time like they are supposed to. Instead, firefighters are forced to complete tasks one at a time while the fire continues to grow.

On January 1, 2026, firefighters responded to a working fire on N. Ogontz Street with reports of people trapped. The first arriving engine arrived with only 2 firefighters while 4 occupants were hanging from windows.

Crews immediately went to work making rescues. But with limited staffing, crews making rescues were not able to get water on the fire at the same time. That delay allowed conditions to worsen and the fire to continue growing. This is dangerous for the victims and the firefighters.

This is the reality of understaffing.

THE LIVES OF OUR CITIZENS AND FIREFIGHTERS ARE WORTH MORE THAN EMPTY SEATS!

A Right-to-Know request was submitted to Springettsbury Township regarding patrols at the park after the basketball hoops were restored.

The records showed the township invested in public safety by assigning dedicated patrol shifts to the park during peak times. We fully support the township taking proactive steps to provide a greater public service to the community and address safety concerns.

What we DON’T SUPPORT is public safety not being treated equally across all departments.

While additional staffing was added for park patrols, our fire department continues to respond to emergencies with understaffed apparatus. Engines are still leaving the station with only two firefighters to protect a growing community.

Public safety should not stop at the park. Residents deserve the same commitment and investment when they call 911 for a fire, police, or medical emergency.

Springettsbury Township has the opportunity to support progress and improve fire department staffing before a tragedy forces the issue.

If you live/work in Springettsbury, Spring Garden Township , or Manchester Township and want equal treatment for your emergency services. Please sign the petition in the comments!
