Stories like this are unfortunately very common. A family hires what looks like a “moving company,” only to find out later they actually hired a broker. This is a big reason our industry has such a notorious reputation and why horror stories are so common.

👉 Here’s the problem:
• A broker doesn’t own trucks or employ movers. They lure customers with unrealistically low rates, then sell your move to the lowest bidder—if they can even find someone to take it. (No-shows are common.)
• Once your job is farmed out, you lose control — your belongings are now in the hands of a company you never agreed to hire.
• These companies often have poor reviews, hidden fees, and no accountability. Many hold belongings hostage for more money than originally agreed to.

✅ How to protect yourself:
• Confirm the company is registered with the Secretary of State and has an active DOT number as a household goods carrier.
• Ask directly: “Are you a broker, or are you the carrier who will handle my move from start to finish?”
• According to the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), brokers must disclose their status if asked — but they won’t volunteer this unless you press them.
• Read reviews carefully — and check multiple platforms for consistency.
• Review your contract (bill of lading) carefully. This is where brokers slip in the fine print that allows them to hand your move off to another company.
