In Kentucky you can ride a lunch train through some of the most beautiful countryside in the state aboard My Old Kentucky Dinner Train, departing from Bardstown. The two-hour trip follows a route through Bourbon Country in restored 1940s dining cars, giving passengers wide-window views of farmland, woods, distilleries, and historic railroad sites. Lunch is prepared fresh while the train is moving and served as a three-course meal at your table. The current summer menu begins with the Golden Spike Salad and fresh rolls, followed by choices such as cheese-and-pepper chicken, Cajun catfish, peach-braised short ribs, or stuffed acorn squash. Dessert and nonalcoholic drinks, including iced tea, coffee, and soft drinks, are also included. Along the route, the train passes Jim Beam, a site linked to Jesse James, and the Jackson Hollow timber trestle in Bernheim Forest. The operation began in 1988, and passengers gather at Bardstown’s former limestone freight house, an 1860 building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Excursions leave from 602 North Third Street. As of July 10, the next available lunch excursion is Friday, July 17, with additional dates offered through summer and fall.
