🚦🥒 SMALL TOWN, BIG HISTORY: FAISON, NC 🌾🚂

Driving through Eastern North Carolina? 2-3 miles off I-40 🚙💨 make time for an hour in Faison—a small town with railroad history, historic homes, Main Street charm, and stories you won’t find from the highway.

The railroad arrived in 1838, helping Faison grow into an agricultural shipping center for to***co, cotton, produce—and eventually cucumbers. 🥒 In 1929, Charles F. Cates & Sons moved its pickle operation here, later becoming one of America’s largest independent pickle producers.

Faison is personal for me. My grandparents lived here, and my childhood memories include family friends, the town’s one stoplight, and my granddaddy, Leland D. “L.D.” Groome, a Cates vice president. Family history credits him with developing the Cates relish recipe, while 1945 agricultural research documents his work with cucumber brining and pickle finishing.

Be sure to visit the 1888 Faison Depot, now home to the Library & Museum, and look for the railroad tracks, historic homes, and the famous one-stoplight downtown. 🚦

Faison’s story also includes difficult chapters—from its plantation-era history and the lives of enslaved African Americans who worked the land to Sherman’s troops passing through in 1865.

🚗 Passing through? Stop for a visit! Explore the depot, stretch your legs, learn a little local history, and discover why this small town is worth more than a quick drive-by.

Small Town Charm & a Little Hollywood History — Wallace, NC 🍓🎬

While visiting my sister, we spent some time exploring Wallace, North Carolina, and this little town has quite a story!

Wallace’s roots date back to the early 1800s, but the arrival of the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad really put it on the map. Originally incorporated as Duplin Roads in 1873, it was renamed Wallace in 1899 in honor of Stephen D. Wallace of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. 🚂

Something I never knew—Wallace was once known as the “World’s Largest Strawberry Exchange!” 🍓 Strawberries became a huge part of the local economy in the early 1900s, with berries shipped out by rail. That history is still celebrated today with the Carolina Strawberry Festival.

And then there’s Wallace’s little piece of Hollywood history! 🎬 Parts of the 2015 Nicholas Sparks movie The Longest Ride, starring Scott Eastwood and Britt Robertson, were filmed right here in downtown Wallace. The town was transformed into 1940s Greensboro, and the mural downtown is a fun reminder of its moment on the big screen.

Today, downtown still has that charming, old-fashioned Main Street feel. We wandered through the local boutiques and shops, including The Traveling Gypsy—one of those places where you can park the car and just explore. 🛍️

Of course, we had to check out some local food and nightlife too! 🍻 Mik’s is a laid-back local spot, and I have to say—the BBQ sandwich was SO good! Sometimes those unassuming places turn out to be the best finds.

We also spent an evening at Mad Boar Restaurant & Pub, enjoying cocktails and live music—and you definitely can’t miss the giant boar fountain out front! 😂🐗

Wallace may be small, but between its railroad roots, strawberry heritage, historic downtown, local shops, good food and Nicholas Sparks movie history, there’s a lot of personality packed into this North Carolina town.

Sometimes the best part of traveling is discovering the places that weren’t necessarily on the tourist list. ❤️

Day 4 began with a final sunrise at sea and a relaxed breakfast before sailing back into Baltimore. We fit in a few last spins on the slots, enjoyed an afternoon nap, and celebrated the trip with cocktails and one more fantastic dinner at Chops Grille—a perfect send-off before one last Baltimore stop.

🚢 Back in Baltimore and off the ship… but not before one more delicious bite!

Before heading home, we visited the iconic Blue Moon Cafe in historic Fells Point. Nestled among cobblestone streets and colorful row houses, it’s easy to see why this spot is a local favorite.

The café was decked out in Halloween décor (my favorite 🎃👻), adding to its quirky, festive charm.

The food lived up to the hype. Everything is made fresh daily, and we couldn’t resist the homemade biscuits and the famous cinnamon bun (vacation calories don’t count, right? 🤪).

Breakfast was incredible—flavorful biscuits and gravy, a satisfying breakfast sammies
, and generous portions. We left full, happy, and already planning a return.

The perfect ending to an unforgettable Baltimore & Bermuda adventure! ❤️

Bermuda… you sure know how to steal our hearts! 💙🇧🇲

What a day & half exploring this beautiful island!

🍹 We kicked things off at Bone Fish Bar (B***r Bar) for a cocktail with an authentic local vibe. Sometimes the best places are the ones you stumble upon.

⛳ Next stop: lunch overlooking the breathtaking views at Port Royal Golf Course. Even if you don’t golf, the scenery alone is worth the trip!

🌊 Then it was time for the famous pink sands of Horseshoe Bay. The water was every shade of turquoise you can imagine, and the beach absolutely lives up to the hype.

📍 A stroll through Hamilton’s Front Street brought us face-to-face with the famous Bermuda Triangle marker before we chased hidden beach coves and one incredible island sunset.

🩴 We even ventured out to Sea Glass Beach. It’s definitely off the beaten path—wear water shoes! It’s not somewhere we’d spend the day, but the adorable swing made for a fun photo stop. 🤪

⚓ Back at the Royal Naval Dockyard, we browsed the colorful shops and admired the stunning handcrafted pottery from Jon Faulkner Pottery—so many beautiful pieces that capture Bermuda’s charm.

🥃 And to wrap up the day… we boarded the pirate ship for the ultimate island debate:

Team Rum Swizzle 🍹 or Team Dark & Stormy 🥃?

We may have sampled both… purely for research purposes, of course! 😂

Bermuda continues to surprise us around every corner, and every stop has been more beautiful than the last. We definitely need more time than this cruise allowed so until we meet again!

Now it’s your turn… which are you choosing—Rum Swizzle or Dark & Stormy?

✈️ Baltimore & Bermuda Adventure Begins! 🦀⚓

Departure day is officially in the books!

The adventure actually started with an unexpected sighting of my bestie in the airport parking garage—she was headed off to a volleyball while we were headed for Baltimore! What are the odds? ❤️

From there it was wheels up from Orlando, a quick stop in Charlotte (with a little lounge time thanks to AMEX 🥃🥂✈️), and then we landed in Baltimore!

Our first stop? Taco Fiesta for lunch, and wow…what a find! Everything is made fresh daily, and you can definitely taste the difference. 🌮 Fresh ingredients, delicious food, and the perfect way to kick off the trip!

After a quick power nap while waiting for Nick and Danielle to arrive, it was time to explore one of Baltimore’s most charming and historic neighborhoods—Fells Point.

We wandered the cobblestone streets and discovered so many hidden gems. We admired the colorful mosaics at How Great Thou Art, the gallery of renowned Baltimore mosaic artist Loring Cornish, whose incredible works are created from recycled glass, tile, and found objects. His vibrant artwork has become a beloved part of Baltimore’s art scene and was such a unique stop on our walk.

Just around the corner we found Lady Day Way, a beautiful tribute to Baltimore’s own Billie Holiday, strolled past the stunning Pendry Hotel, once the city’s historic Recreation Pier, explored Broadway Market, and enjoyed the incredible murals and public art that seem to be around every corner in Fells Point.

Dinner at Angie’s Seafood absolutely lived up to the hype. The crab cakes were packed with jumbo lump crab, and the filet…wow…it literally cut like butter! 🦀🥩 Every bite was amazing.

Of course, no evening is complete without dessert, so we wrapped up the night with a stop at Kilwins for ice cream before calling it a night.

Day one was the perfect mix of travel, incredible food, history, art, and making memories. Tomorrow…it’s time to set sail for Bermuda! 🚢💙
