Fitting a checkup into a trip sounds like it costs you a day. At Hanaro Gangnam it costs you the hours you were going to spend asleep.

The thing that matters here is vertical. Reception on 7, labs and dental on 8, the comprehensive and international checkup floor on 9, radiology and gastroenterology on 10, general checkup and the thyroid clinic on 11. Five connected floors means a full morning of tests is a lift ride rather than three taxis, and a 07:00 weekday start means you are out before the day begins.

No clinic is added on reputation alone — Himedi assesses every location in person.

She works at a big, reputable hospital in the States. She‘s also a patient there.

So when she wanted an endoscopy — and when she thought her husband needed one too — she knew exactly who to ask. It still took a fight to get approved.

In Korea it’s the kind of exam people get almost every year. Routine.

That‘s the gap. If you’re already coming to Korea, the test you‘ve been waiting on is a morning here, not a year of referrals.

Forbes visited Seoul’s Bumin Prestige Lifecare Center, the country’s largest single-floor screening facility, to see why Himedi clients are flying in for full-body checkups instead of a weekend at the spa.

The numbers: South Korea drew a record 2 million foreign patients last year, double its 2024 total. As our co-founder and CEO Donkyo Seo told Forbes, “the most important thing — and what differentiates South Korea from others — is operational efficiency.”

30 exams. One building. Two to three hours. Blood and urine results back in minutes, not days.

Worth saying clearly: the researchers are on the kit’s side. Their conclusion is that self-sampling is a robust access strategy, and they are right, because the screening test with the best real-world performance is the one that actually gets done.

The 0.745 against 0.886 is a sensitivity gap, not a verdict. Specificity came out close — 0.850 against 0.870 — so the kit is not throwing false alarms. It is missing a bit more.

Which makes it a question about your calendar rather than your health. If a mail-in kit is what stands between you and no screening at all, take the kit. If a checkup is already going into a trip you are taking anyway, the more sensitive method comes with the visit — no extra appointment and no extra day.

You are already going to Seoul. The question is where these eight procedures happen. MDsave is a marketplace of prepaid cash prices, so these are real bookable numbers rather than chargemaster fiction. A colonoscopy averages $2,772 on it. The estimated national average for the same procedure — what a typical billed or negotiated price looks like — is $5,052.

The $8,500 is the conservative end. It counts eight procedures and nothing else. Buy every one of those eight at the single cheapest facility in the country and you get to about $3,570, across eight separate appointments in eight different cities, which is not a thing anyone actually does.

Prices accessed August 2026 and re-checked before posting. Marketplace listings move. The same eight sit inside one $2,024 morning of the trip you were already taking.

A whole-body MRI is not a hard thing to buy. What varies is what happens after the machine stops.

In most screening models the scan is captured in one place and read in another, and you hear the result on a call booked for later. In Korea it runs as one clinical process: a radiologist is in the room while you are scanned, can adjust the protocol or add sequences on the spot, and talks you through preliminary insight the same day. Full results follow in about two weeks.

The hardware is part of it — the partner centre scans at 3.0T on a Siemens MAGNETOM VIDA, and Korea has 38.7 MRI units per million people against an OECD average of 21.2 (OECD Health Statistics 2025). But what you are paying for is the reading.

$1,500 on its own, or $1,799 with a checkup. That is real money, and what it buys is a radiologist-led scan, a conversation the same day, and a written report you leave Korea with.

If Seoul is already on your itinerary, this fits inside one morning of a trip you had already planned.

A full checkup in Korea takes one morning. Not a mammogram in March and an ultrasound in June — the whole panel, one building, start to finish.

That’s what Jenn booked through Himedi for herself, her husband and her mom, while they were already in Korea. Her words: done within two to three hours. The same tests at home would have meant booking each one separately and waiting weeks or months in between.

The difference isn’t the medicine. It’s that everything is scheduled together and run in sequence, instead of spread across a year of separate visits.

If you’re already going to Korea, that’s a morning you already have.

Lifespan and healthspan are not the same measurement. One counts years. The other counts the years you spend well, and the gap between them is what this conversation is about.

Himedi co-founder William Ban joined Dr. Roger Landry and Danielle Palli on The Bright Side of Longevity: why Americans now go to South Korea to be screened, what AI-powered diagnostics are and are not good for, and what a system built around looking early rather than waiting for symptoms looks like from the inside.

The Korean checkup is the concrete version of that argument. Bloods, imaging, endoscopy and cancer markers in one morning, read together by one team, rather than handed down a referral chain over a year.

79% of Koreans with high blood pressure know they have it. In the United States, 59.2%. The two are not counted the same way — the US measures hypertension from the lower threshold of 130/80, which pulls milder cases in — so the gap is not as clean as it looks. The direction is not.

Knowing is not treatment. But nobody reaches treatment without being tested first, and that is the part Korea industrialised.

The wider research agrees on the category, not the specifics: a 2026 Nature analysis of 34 Asian countries and territories, 1990–2023, found falling cardiovascular mortality was the primary contributor to life-expectancy gains in East Asia and high-income Asia Pacific. That is a regional finding about cardiovascular disease as a group, with no Korea-specific stroke figure in it. Korea’s own 82% comes from Statistics Korea.
