The mountain bluebird is such a beauty, isn't it? It's got this brilliant sky-blue color that makes it pop against the backdrop of the sagebrush and open landscapes of places like Yellowstone and Grand Teton. You’ll often spot them in open fields, perched on fence posts or flitting about catching insects. Fun fact: they can hover in place, much like a hummingbird, when they're on the hunt. Keep your eyes peeled around April to mid-autumn — that's their prime time in these parts.

★ Andy’s Tip: Sunrise or sunset is when their colors truly shine. Head to a spot like Antelope Flats for some great viewing moments and photo ops.

Bacterial mats are teeming with thermophilic bacteria like Thermus aquaticus. These hot-loving critters thrive in the extreme heat and acidic environment. They contribute to the vivid color patterns in the pools, those bright yellows and oranges are a dead giveaway.

★ Andy’s Tip: Norris often smells like rotten eggs, but it’s the hottest basin in the park.
