Save the Charlestown Ferry

Save the Charlestown Ferry On January 4, 2012, the MBTA announced that it was considering eliminating all ferry service to and from the Charlestown Navy Yard.

They eventually walked that back and kept service, though dramatically increasing rates. Then again in the fall of 2020, the MBTA announced plans to "suspend" all Charlestown ferry service. This time they went through with it in January 2021, and since then there has been no water transportation available to connect Charlestown to downtown Boston. This has been devastating to those of us in our co

mmunity who rely on the boat for our commute, and for whom the boat was a significant factor in choosing to live in Charlestown and/or the Navy Yard. This article had a more positive take, stating that, "The control board approved resumption of direct ferry service from Charlestown and Hingham and more frequent service between Hull/Hingham and Boston." Other articles hedge a bit more, saying only that the control board gave the MBTA the "discretion" to resume Charlestown ferry service.

MBTA OFFICIALS said on Monday that they plan to restore bus, subway, and commuter rail service to pre-pandemic levels as soon as possible even though they are forecasting that ridership will not return to pre-pandemic levels for at least five years. The T abandoned its plan to reduce service levels....

From the folks at Boston Harbor Now:

If the MBTA ferry service came back with a full schedule this spring, how would you use it??

before the 3/29 FMCB meeting. (I'll be compiling this and sharing it officially.)

On January 22, 2021, the MBTA's Boston Harbor ferry service was reduced to a limited number of trips from Hingham and Hull, and Charlestown Ferry was suspended. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, all MBTA ferry service was suspended for 14 weeks before returning with a reduced schedule for summer and f...

The MBTA is backtracking on some of its recent budget cuts in the face of criticism from the state’s congressional delegation over the agency’s decision to reduce service despite $1 billion-plus from multiple recent federal relief bills.
