Robert J. Walker Shipwreck Mapping Project

Robert J. Walker Shipwreck Mapping Project NJ divers will work with NOAA marine archeologists to survey the historic hydrographic survey vessel;
Robert J. Walker sunk off Atlantic City, NJ in 1860

This survey will involve teams of scuba divers preforming precise measurements of the shipwreck, its height, and distribution on the seafloor as well as any and all major structures and photographing artifacts ‘in situ’, using side scan sonar, multi-beam sonar, mapping equipment and underwater video/still images, so as to provide an archeological record of the shipwreck and catalog its dimensions

for science. Expedition: Robert J. Walker Underwater Survey/Mapping Project

The proposed expedition is planned for August, 11-17th, 2014 and will be conducted out of Absecon Inlet, Atlantic City, NJ. The wreck site is located approximately 12 miles offshore in 85 feet of water. The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and the Coastal Marine Field Station and Black Laser Learning specifically will provide a vessel, crew and side scan sonar to accurately image and define the wreck location and chart elevation off seafloor with the end goal to help divers identify key structures on the wreck site to develop mapping and survey measurements towards producing an archeological drawing of the wreck site.
