Our feet are the foundation for all movement in our body. Wearing shoes is actually not natural, and therefore, most people who’ve grown up and live in societies where footwear is the norm, we’ve developed chronic musculoskeletal dysfunctions due to our feet being stuck in shoes. The toes are naturally supposed to spread, with the big toe supporting a huge amount of your weight and providing balance. Wearing shoes has made us lose the ability to independently move and manipulate our toes, and those muscles and tendons have lost strength and power over time, often leading to flat feet, plantar fasciitis, and other foot problems. When this happens your knees and hips attempt to compensate, which creates a chain reaction of the body working to correct dysfunction, but never correcting the source issue, which is your feet and toes being weak and ineffective. Working on your feet and toes fixes everything else. Most in western societies have lost the ability to independently move their big toes apart from the other four toes and vice versa. Moving these toes separately specifically works the stabilizer muscles required for balance, and load displacement that is lost when you wear shoes all the time. This leads to foot problems like plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, and bunions. Practice these daily until you can move your big toes independently of your four other toes, and also keep your big toes planted while raising your four other toes. Last, practice planting your toes to the ground once they’re all raised, starting with the pinky toe, all the way to the big toe, respectively.
